Happy Capricorn New Moon! Happy solar eclipse. This is the time of the zodiac calendar when we focus on real life. It’s a lunar month to make lasting resolutions, plan for the future, and set boundaries for the influences that are no longer supporting us. Capricorn is also the sign of maturity, ambition, structure, and mastering the material world, themes that will work their way through the coming four weeks. That said, the new moon is exact on January 5, 2018 at 8:28 pm, 15 degrees Capricorn. That’s 5:28 pm Los Angeles, 1:28 am London on January 6, and 12:28 pm in Sydney.

If new moons are new beginnings, then solar eclipses opens us to a bigger chapter of time, one that tends to move us into a new direction, sometimes dramatically. Eclipses are the engines of fate and changes in fortune. And every six months eclipse season arrives like clockwork, their energies activating a particular part of our life that will undoubtably change. (You can read your January 2019 horoscopes to find out what area of your life is changing.)

This solar eclipse is like that feeling we get when we wake up in the New Year with the realization that we’re not getting any younger and if we want to have what we’ve always wanted, then we better start making a serious effort. So we draw up a list of resolutions and work hard to be a better version of ourselves. We find people to hold ourselves accountable.

Capricorn is the sign of reality as well as reality checks. The path forward is no longer flat, it’s uphill. Capricorn makes us climb, even if it seems impossible. It’s a proof, a test. Will we pass it? Will we make it? (If you’ve gone through your Saturn Return at age 28-29, then you know what it’s like when life demands more of you.)

This month is setting us up for six months of serious, lasting changes. With the eclipse’s activation of Saturn in Capricorn, we’re making new commitments, taking on new responsibilities, and working towards new ambitions. This solar eclipse is one part wake up call, another part inspiration to make long overdue steps towards the future. To give an example of what kind of changes, maybe this is the month we make a career change. Maybe we get sober. Maybe we say yes to a serious relationship … or say no to one that needs to end. Maybe we get organized. Maybe we get our finances in order. Maybe we decide to write that book or go back to school. Maybe we start taking our art seriously. Maybe we finally face our fears.

Another reason this eclipse is so powerful is that it’s not to far away in the sky from Pluto, lord of death and rebirth, immutable transformations, and the alchemy of conscious and the soul. If fact, the eclipse is sandwiched between Saturn in Pluto. This is why January may feel like we’ve crossed a line we can’t go back on. And this eclipse may show us what we’re still holding onto despite the fact that it’s long dead. It may also show us the deepest parts of ourselves that need to be purged. Pluto also shows us what we have to do; it’s a soul level imperative.

This is serious stuff. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. Use this month wisely. Don’t be afraid to live capital L Life. Don’t be afraid to make long overdue changes. The beauty of Saturn is that it helps build and construct for the future. It supports us and helps us find balance … when we are willing to do the work and take our responsibilities seriously. Let Saturn be your life coach this month. (Maybe you’re even working with a life coach or therapist this month.) Use the drive and energy of Mars in Aries to push forward.

Lastly, the eclipse falls just a day before Uranus turns direct in Aries. Marking the end of a seven to eight year chapter, Uranus in Aries has been the awakening of self and powerful new beginnings. A Uranus station can bring something unexpected or a surprise. Be open to breakthroughs and wild new directions.
