Happy Leo Full Moon! Happy lunar eclipse! This is the time of the lunar calendar when the spotlight is on individuality, creativity, and celebrating the joy of life. Leo is a sign that teaches us to be ourselves and to share our talents and passion with the world. Since this is a lunar eclipse, too, we may be feeling this full moon as a call to action, a crisis, or a pivotal turning point. That said, the full moon is exact on January 21 at 12:16 am EST, 0 degrees Leo/Aquarius. That’s 9:16 pm Los Angeles on January 20, 5:16 pm London on January 21, and 4:16 pm Sydney.
Every six months we enter eclipse season, a time when doors swiftly open and close and the wheel of fate turns us in a new direction. The purpose of eclipses is to move the narrative of our lives forward. The often coincide with moves, marriages, births, job changes, and other milestone events. Wherever the eclipses are happening in our chart, we can be sure that that’s going to be a big area of focus over the coming six to twelve months.
We’re in a time of transition with these latest eclipses. The lunar nodes — the point in the sky that triggers eclipses when the new and full moons line up with them — moved from Leo/Aquarius to Cancer/Capricorn back in November 2018. We’re moving from needing to rediscover ourselves and celebrate our individuality (North Node in Leo) to needing to find what feeds and fulfills us (North Node in Cancer). This Leo Full Moon eclipse represents the end of a story that began in 2017. And it asks us, pointedly so, how have we been sharing our talents, creativity, and passions over the last two years? Have we had the courage to be ourselves? Have we stepped into the spotlight? Do we now have a stronger sense of who we are?
Like all stories, sometimes the more dramatic bits are right at the end. This full moon eclipse also packs a dramatic punch. Not only is it in Leo, a sign known for drama (SORRY, LEOS), but it makes what’s called a square to Uranus in Aries, a planet that can bring unexpected surprises, plot twists, and radical changes. Uranus energy also wants us to breakout of anything that’s holding us back. And since we know that the Leo eclipses were all about us being ourselves, how can we use the power of this eclipses to stop hiding? Stop selling ourselves short? And stop being who we’re not?
Leo is a sign that’s meant to make you feel alive. It’s the sign of the Sun. It’s a fire sign. It’s meant to wake you up. The South Node of the Moon has been in Capricorn and now Aquarius, Saturn ruled signs — the signs of matter and manifestation. Life means nothing without heart and passion. Without it we’re just bones and sinew. Capricorn and Aquarius also remind us that our time on this planet is finite. We need to make it mean something. We need to feel like we matter.
What’s the most radical thing you can do right now? It’s a question I’ve been asking my clients of late, especially my Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius clients. The astrology of 2019 continues this push for us to breakout of our small selves and to bring more consciousness and awareness — and heart — into our lives.
We can’t overlook that this eclipse puts a strong emphasis on the energy of Saturn in Capricorn. If you think back to the January 5 Capricorn New Moon solar eclipse, you’ll remember that we’re in a period of time where we have to get real. Capricorn energy is sobering, it pushes us to grow up, take on responsibility, and get our lives in order. So as much as we are using the lunar eclipse to bring more creativity, individuality, and passion into our lives, it needs a container. So don’t neglect real life right now. Saturn is continuing to hold us accountable, like a stern parent.
Speaking of Saturn, it’s making an exact square to Mars in Aries, an aspect that may bring up some difficulty. Mars and Saturn aren’t exactly known for being the friendliest of planets traditionally and their square may provoke. (It may bring up something that began way back in the beginning April 2018, when the two planets were conjunct.) That said, Mars makes a trine to Venus and Jupiter, an aspect that says that whatever does happen, whatever doors do close, there are opportunities waiting for us if we have faith as well as a healthy sense of adventure.
Just don’t forget to be yourself.
