Happy Capricorn Full Moon! This is the time of year when we see how far our ambitions and plans for the future have taken us, reaping the intentions we planted during the powerful new moon on January 1. Capricorn is the sign of the goat, climbing higher and higher up the mountain against all odds. It is the sign of success, reward, status, hierarchy, career, leadership, government, structures, and commitment. This full moon will be exact on July 12, 2014 at 7:25 am EDT and 20 degrees Capricorn/Cancer.
I live in New York City. It’s a Capricorn city, consolidated on January 1, 1898. You can see the archetype everywhere you go, from the towering skyscrapers of lower Manhattan and midtown to even the island’s bedrock that forms the powerful foundation for the weight of these buildings. It’s a city that ruthlessly encourages its inhabitants to strive for something higher. And, as the song so famously declares, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere.
However, we’re in an era where much of that power structure is shifting. In astrology we don’t have to look any further than Pluto in Capricorn and the ongoing cardinal grand cross. The last few years have been about dismantling old structures in order to build something new. Doesn’t mean the old world isn’t going down without a fight.
Just as the world shifts, we too shift. Our own internal structures have been in a state of collapse and rebuild over the last few years. (Think back to the person you were five years ago and marvel at how much of an evolutionary leap you’ve made.) Those of us who have had a lot invested in the status quo have likely struggled the most against this shift. The full moon will be a reminder that even the energy of Capricorn, the sign that builds it to last, has to tear down and start again.
In the chart of the full moon, you may see a familiar foe in the form of a cardinal grand cross. That would be the big red square contained within the borders of the wheel. The Sun and Moon make what’s called a square (90 degrees; friction) to Uranus and Mars. This is a confrontational full moon and it will be one of the last hurrahs of an energy that has dominated 2014. It will force you to look deeply into your own relationship with the energy of Capricorn. What are your ambitions? What is your relationship with the world at large? How committed are you? Are you true to your responsibilities? How do you use power? The Pluto in Capricorn era is about looking at the underbelly of power and authority, even if it’s our own.
Because the full moon is square the lunar nodes, there is a deep current of karma running through events right now and into the coming week — especially with two planets, Mercury and Jupiter, at the karmic 29 degrees. This isn’t easy work and I know you’re all exhausted, but be present with anything that is coming up and see it part of a bigger narrative that you’ve been working on. We’re tearing down old karmic structures not just from this life, but many lifetimes, which includes all the times we’ve abused power, manipulated, or acted the authoritarian. This means looking into our shadow (Saturn in Scorpio) and really seeing all the parts of our soul that we would rather not look at. But Jupiter in Cancer’s last gift is the sweet reminder to soften our hearts as well as our bodies and to nurture others as well as ourself. And just as we ruthlessly clear through the old, don’t forget to make time to create the new.
The good news is that this is the last big grand cross of this year! You’ve nearly made it through the gauntlet of a lifetime! Seriously. This is a monumental feat. Make sure to celebrate how far you’ve come. Jupiter’s upcoming arrival in joyous Leo on July 16, 2014 will start to lighten the mood.
