Happy Full Moon in Aquarius! This is the time of the year when we turn the spotlight on humanity as well as issues that impact the collective. Aquarius is community, friendships, technology, intellect, and the future. It’s also known for its eccentric streak, so we’ll be pushing the envelope in the coming days. The full moon will be exact on August 18, 2016 at 5:27 am EDT and 25 degrees Aquarius/Leo. That’s 2:27 am Los Angeles, 10:27 am London, and 7:27 pm Sydney. First, let’s clear up some confusion about this full moon. Is it an eclipse? Is it not an eclipse? Seeing how this full moon just barely touches the ecliptic, I’m putting it in the #notaneclipse camp. (Even NASA downgraded it after initially listing it as an eclipse.) And why would we care if it’s an eclipse or not? Because eclipses are known to pack an energetic punch, signalling a potential sudden shift in events. That said, eclipse or not, there’s plenty going on for us to work with.
Full moons mark the apex of the lunar month. They are a time when we are spurred to take action or make a decision. Under the light of the full moon, we see things for what they really are. Whatever we began at the new moon two weeks before has come to fruition.
When we started the lunar month on August 2 with the Leo New Moon, we entered a four week period steeped in themes around creativity, self expression, talent, and identity. The new moon invited us to create something new and revel in the spark of ourselves that animates our creations. Now at the full moon we see our creations in the light, ready to release it out into the world.
Taking a closer look at the chart of the Aquarius Full Moon, what really jumps out at me is the approaching conjunction between Mars and Saturn. For those who do not know, Saturn is the ruling planet of Aquarius, which means the energy of the full moon beams over to Saturn, which is currently in Sagittarius. The dynamic between the signs Aquarius and Sagittarius is quite complementary — faith, freedom, equality, ideas that impact the globe as well as the collective, journeys that inspire as well as educate. But Mars + Saturn? We’ve got serious things to figure out, commitments to assess, and a future that demands our attention. Our view of the world is shaking. How will we open up to a different direction? New takings of consciousness?
The other striking aspect of the full moon chart is a close connection between the Sun, Moon, and Uranus. There may be a shock in this full moon, an element of the unexpected, something that pushes our understanding and transforms our thinking, or a sudden insight that finally allows us to connect all the dots. The energy of the full moon also bounces over to Virgo. So, for as crazy (read wonderfully weird) as Aquarius can be, we can escape the practical details in the coming days. If you’re looking to make a big change in your life, make sure you get very clear about what you need in order to make it happen. Incarnate the future into the present.
The exact conjunction between Mars and Saturn on August 24 will be the moment all of our changes will take form. The full moon is merely getting us prepared. And, whatever we begin, will unfold over the next two years.
