Happy Leo New Moon! This is the time of the year when we turn our attention toward individuality, self expression, talent, and performance. Leo is the Sun; Leo is joy and a playful celebration of life. With that in mind, the new moon will be exact on August 2, 2016 at 4:45 pm EDT, 10 degrees Leo. That’s 1:45 pm Los Angeles, 9:45 pm London, and 6:45 pm Sydney on August 3 for those further afield. (Click here for the exact new moon chart.)

The Sun is the source of life both in the sky and in the astrology chart. It is the spark of the creator that shines through each of the twelve zodiac signs. When the Sun is in Leo, the Sun has returned home and the Leo New Moon is an invitation for us to return to ourselves, rediscovering the spark of life that resides within.

After the previous lunar month and its heavy, often heartbreaking energy, we could use the light. If you’ve been feeling low, use the fire of the Leo New Moon to reconnect with your joy and passion. Set aside time for what fuels you. Recommit to your creative talents and gifts. Be in the reality and truth of who you really are. Don’t hide or hold back.

This new moon, with its absence of tense outer planet aspects, is probably one of our better lunar months in 2016. But here are a couple of points to keep in mind. One, the the new moon chart is pretty much all fire element. Mars, newly in Sagittarius, joins five planets in the fire signs. That’s a lot of fire. Two, there’s no air in the chart. Not one single planet. So there’s all this spark or this build up of heat, but no release. (I think the Aquarius Full Moon on August 18 will be an ignition.) A lack of air also makes movement, transmission, and connection a little difficult. As a result this lunar month many be hot literally and metaphorically.

That said, the fire element is inspiration. It’s the enthusiasm of creation. It’s feisty. It loves a gamble and the adrenaline of taking a risk. This lunar month we’re being pushed to set something in motion, perhaps a little recklessly so. The Leo/Aquarius polarity is the movement of creation into consciousness. Aquarius takes all the creative ideas of Leo and translates them to the level of the collective where they become available as shared human experiences. For instance, Leo uses its talents to create something that then becomes something that everyone can use. This lunar month is the month of invention.

Pisces will be our blindspot this month. The Sun and Moon’s quincunx to Neptune in Pisces will be a reminder for us to have compassion for others, to recognize the universality in all things, to seek input from beyond the physical world. So as you get inspired to make a change this month or create something new, make sure you check in with Neptune. Make sure you check in with your heart as well as your soul.
