Happy Capricorn Full Moon! It’s the time in the lunar calendar when we shine a light on responsibility, maturity, and achievement. And for that Capricorn not only sets a high bar for us to reach for, but pushes us to build something of ourselves in this life. With that in mind, the full moon is exact on June 28, 2018 at 12:53 am EDT, 6 degrees Capricorn/Cancer. That’s 9:53 pm Los Angeles on June 27, 5:53 am London on June 28, and 2:53 pm in Sydney.

Capricorn is the polarity of Cancer, which means that the signs sit opposite each other in the wheel of the zodiac. There is both a tension of opposites as well as a complementary energy between the two. If the Sun’s journey through Cancer teaches us about the importance the home as well as having people around us who are like family to help anchor and nurture our connection to life. There’s a reason that Cancer forms the foundation of the natural wheel of zodiac; it connects us to the very roots of existence.

Capricorn, by contrast, pushes us out of the nest and into the world. It’s the highest sign in the zodiac wheel and represents what we strive for, what we want to be “when we grow up.” It speaks to our responsibilities to ourselves, the world, and maturity needed to take on these responsibilities. To that point, Cancer supports Capricorn, providing the fuel to reach great heights.

When we have a full moon in Capricorn, it’s one of our annual check-ins with this process of growing up, getting older, and making something of our lives. How are we doing? Ruled by the planet Saturn, it’s not unlike a meeting with a parent or a boss and getting a progress report. So this full moon may give you a lot of feedback on where you’re at in life. Full moons also force the issue. They show, they reveal. We can’t avoid the matter at hand. It’s either a left or a right.

I tell people that we have to do Saturn. (If you’re turning 29–30, you’re going through your Saturn Return and know exactly what it feels like to have to do Saturn.) We have to honor our commitments as well as the expectations needed to do in order to thrive in life. We have to earn a living, we have to respect time, we have to push ourselves harder to grow and mature. These are all Saturnian concepts.

We also can’t forget that, as of December 19, 2017, Saturn is in the sign of Capricorn, which means that Saturn has come home to the sign it rules. This means that Saturn is very strong in the sky right now and it’s even more of an imperative that we honor our relationship with time, commitment, responsibility, and integrity. And if we don’t, Saturn is all too happy to show us the effects of our actions.

The full moon is right on Saturn in Capricorn. In astrology speak we say that the full moon is “conjunct” Saturn — ie, the same place in the sky. Therefore our Saturn work is unavoidable. We cannot deny our commitments and responsibilities. We cannot escape our work. If we’ve been in illusion about ourselves and our lives and the people in our lives, this is a reality check.

I’m actually a big fan of Saturn. I outline why in my In Defense of Saturn article for why. It’s a planet that gets things done. And it’s very concrete in its objectives — to not only get us to grow up, but to learn and gain wisdom about life. So as much as I caution about Saturn in Capricorn, this is your full moon to push yourself higher. If you’re struggling with something, seek out a mentor or someone older who can give you some guidance. (This is a positive expression of Saturn.) Come up with a plan and have a friend hold you accountable for your goals. (Saturn loves plans and accountability.) Create structure if you’re lacking structure. Be honest and real with yourself if you’ve missed the mark on something and endeavor to right it.

I should mention that the full moon makes a square to Chiron in Aries, which means that we have to confront where we’re afraid to move forward on something. Even if we know we should do all the things listed above, why do we sabotage or hold back? What’s the pain there? The knot that needs to be undone? Chiron represents the knot in the fabric of our lives that’s preventing something from being its highest potential.

In short, let’s do positive Saturn! Let’s use this full moon to recommit to something important or find the balance needed in order to create order and harmony in our lives. Let’s honor time and our commitments. Let’s make a plan for the future. Let’s strive for something better.
