Welcome to the Leo Full Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when the spotlight is on passion and creativity, individuality and personality. Leo teaches us to be true to ourselves, to discover the light within and to shine it for all to see. The full moon is exact on February 5, 2023 at 1:29 pm ET, 16 degrees Leo/Aquarius. That’s 10:29 am Los Angeles, 6:29 pm London, 8:29 pm Johannesburg, 5:29 am Sydney on February 6, and 7:29 am Auckland.
Full moons are decision points, a time when the spotlight is on a certain area of our life. We may have to quickly react to events or see things for what they really are. They are dynamic and sometimes challenging.
First, let’s separate pop astrology Leo from the sign and archetype of Leo. We’ve come to expect that Leo energy is showy, over the top, and entirely self interested. But to see that as the totality of Leo does a deep disservice to the sign.
Leo is the sign of the Sun, the light of the divine that lives in all creation. As the second fire sign after Aries, it’s a sign that’s meant to inspire, to ignite passion, and to illuminate our lives. Even if you are not a Leo, you have the Sun — the ruler of Leo — in another zodiac sign. There, the solar light passes through the sign like a prism. Leo takes the fire of Aries, the raw spark of life that initiates and motivates and it gives it color.
Life’s a bit hard right now. We’re coming out of a period where the world as well as personal events may have taxed, depleted, or discouraged us. Nothing is the same. Perhaps we’re low on motivation or, worse, low on hope. If that is the case, this Leo Full Moon is an important reminder for us to not lose our light.
In astrology, fire is the first element, which means that everything starts with fire. It opens us up to new beginnings, energizes us, nourishes faith and hope, and puts us in the romance of life. Let there be light, as the old bit of scripture goes. Regardless of what we believe in, we can agree that light is what we reach for.
How will we make a change? What’s the most radical thing we can do right now? Perhaps a radical act of self preservation. Or a radical act of self expression and revelation. After all, Uranus in Taurus is in a tight square to the Sun and Moon along the Lunar Nodes. This could be a moment this year, one of key moments stretching back a few years back, where we can truly reinvent ourselves.
Prioritize what gives you life and passion. Make time for play. Make time for other people. Life is short. Never forget that our fire needs nourishment and care.
That said, hold on tight. This full moon may spin us in a new direction.
