Welcome to the Capricorn New Moon, the time in the lunar month when we get focused, set goals and resolutions, and take steps towards being a more responsible adult. But it’s also a time to get accountable. The new moon is exact on January 13 at 12:00 am EST, 23 degrees Capricorn. That’s 9:00 pm Los Angeles on January 12, 5:00 am London on January 13, 7:00 am Johannesburg, 4:00 pm Sydney, and 6:00 pm Auckland.
We should all know Capricorn by now. After all, we did a master class on Capricorn from 2018-2020 when Saturn was in Capricorn alongside Jupiter and Pluto. Capricorn is the sign of the manifested world. It’s structures, boundaries, and walls. It’s ambition and power. It helps us to build something in this world. It’s growing up and getting older. It’s hard earned growth and success.
Perhaps it’s a little simple to say that Capricorn and its ruling planet Saturn helps us to be an adult, but there is something to be said about that. So, with today’s new moon, it’s time to be an adult. And being an adult sometimes means hard decisions … or having the wisdom to make strategic choices that set us up for the future.
If something is a mess, it’s time to clean it up. If something is wildly out of balance, it has to come back to center. If there is a lack of structure and boundaries, well … you get the idea. But if the structures already in place are sound, then we’re ready to take a step up in life. This could bring a promotion or increased responsibility.
That said, there’s three defining features of this new moon that’s worth noting. The first is the new moon’s conjunction to Pluto. If new moon’s are new beginnings, then the coming four weeks will be lived through the lens of endings, rebirth, nonnegotiable transformation, and a profound facing of self. I know those are stark words, but we have to be conscious of what the sky is asking of us now.
Two, Mars in Taurus squares Saturn in Aquarius, an aspect that turns up the volume as well as the stress factor in this new moon period. Two parts of our lives may be in conflict or running up against each other. We may feel like this new moon is pushing us into new territory while one foot is uncomfortable elsewhere. How do we resolve this internal as well as external conflict?
Three, the new moon comes a day before Uranus turns direct in Taurus at 6 degrees. Uranus, a planet of awakenings and new consciousness, shows us where we’re in the way. It shakes and upturns. It breaks us from the past. It forces reinvention. Uranus direct may feel like a spiritual (or literal) earthquake.
With different parts of our lives shaking and moving, it’s important to remember that’s it’s still Capricorn Season, it’s still a time to set goals, to create discipline, and work to build something that supports us for the future. Even if the astrology is asking that we tear down or rework what is not working, we can’t lose sight of our bigger goals … unless our bigger goals were never our goals to begin with.
That’s the other thing. The Uranus factor in all of this means that we have to see where we are out of ourselves or going against ourselves. Uranus what’s authenticity and is ready to take away what keeps us small, imprisoned, or stuck in a life that is out of alignment with our highest potential.
That said, this is a new moon conjunct Pluto. We have to face the darkness within. And if we don’t, Pluto will happily show us where we’re out of alignment, out of integrity, and out of the truth of who we really are.
Get ready for a powerful, transformational coming four weeks.
