Welcome to January 2021 and the new year! After the intensities and turbulence for 2020, will we find solid ground? In many ways January sets the stage for this year’s astrology — a clash between the old and new.
One of the things you may notice below is that I’ve created video horoscopes for each of the twelve signs. As I noted in my December 2020 horoscopes and subsequently elsewhere, I’ve needed to migrate to a new modality for the monthly horoscopes due to time constraints in the midst of a busy workload. (This is a work in progress as I create a new workflow. Still tinkering with format and it’s my plan to do transcripts, if not this month then the following.)
Then again, my own actions mirror what’s going on in the sky this month. 2020 ushered in something very new, it cleared space, it demanded we change our systems and structures, whether they are personal or global.
We’re going to see this front and center in January’s astrology as Saturn, now in Aquarius, begins to form its first square to Uranus in Taurus. It’s as if two parallel stories running along side 2018, 2019, and 2020 now have to be resolved, lived, integrated. But there will be friction.
The first thing to pay attention to this month is Mars’s arrival in Taurus on January 6. Finally out of Aries, it’s a breath of fresh air after six months in one sign. But Mars quickly starts to activate Saturn and Uranus (and Jupiter). Saturn is a planet that, on a whole, wants to preserve the status quo. It’s cautious and instincts lie in creating balance. Uranus, however, is the archetype of Prometheus. It lights a fire in the dark. It opens our eyes. It demands change, especially anything that is inauthentic or unnecessarily constrictive.
Then on January 13 Mars squares Saturn, traditionally a difficult aspect. We may feel our world move and shift in some way. We may feel that friction between the old and the new even more.
On the same day there’s a Capricorn New Moon that in may feel like an echo back to themes we were living and working through from 2018-2020. The new moon also conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn, a powerhouse of an aspect that demands we do a lot of deep physical, emotional, and psychic restructuring in the coming four weeks. The new moon also picks up on Mars square Saturn; this is not easy astrology.
Then on January 14 Uranus turns direct at 6 degrees Taurus — another potential seismic shift, one that echoes back to a story that began in May 2018 as well as March 2019.
When the Sun arrives in Aquarius on January 19 we not only kick off a new season, but one that puts a lens on our new Saturn in Aquarius story. Pay attention to the themes and connections you are making. Note how they line up with what Saturn in Aquarius is asking you to work on until March 2023. (For a refresher, read Saturn in Aquarius: Sign by Sign.)
Then on January 20 Mars joins up with Uranus in Taurus followed by a square to Jupiter in Aquarius. This is powerful astrology, one that, again, pushes something new into our lives — a new phase, a new chapter, a new story. One that may be put into a dramatic spotlight with a Leo Full Moon on January 28 at 9 degrees, what with its opposition to Saturn and Jupiter and square to Mars and Uranus.
Time for the next level.

Thank you! Last February I definitely had an epiphany. I was burnt out at my job, socially, mentally, emotionally, financially, physically. I packed only what I couldn’t part with (and my dog) and moved from Maryland to South Carolina. I swallowed my pride, moved in with my sister near the ocean and away from everyone and everything I ever knew the past 31 years. I feel like I felt the collective “Covid” lifestyle shift before it went into effect. I spent some time reliving patterns I was “running” away from then ~Sept I had a shift in faith and really started to embody all I knew I was. October applied to a “lateral” job transfer in Raleigh, NC — moved November 29th (for the job!) My new store was set to open Dec. 15th but pushed back due to permits so I’ve been working in stores all around our market in the meantime — we are now set to open Jan. 28th. While my position is technically the same, this store is one of a kind within my organization. A space of innovation and opportunity — a 2021 version of a Flagship store. I am also in the midst of unrolling my photography side business, which is something I’ve always aspired to do. I mapped out January with the 31st being my day of being *booked* starting with mini sessions to build my portfolio. Thank you for your messages around astrology and moon cycles. Since I’ve been more in tune with myself and the planets, moon cycles.. I’ve been able to leverage these shifts and see a correlation. I appreciate your messages and insight. (Sorry for the essay! haha)
Leo rising here, everything you said resonated with me. Love the video format. Thank you
Wow Katy, watching this on Monday Jan 18th, and as a Capricorn born Jan 13th, this has been so spot on for me so far. I’ve always loved your readings, and the new video format is great!!
