Happy Taurus New Moon! This is the time of the year when we turn our attention toward the physical world, from the soil and fertility to the basic necessities we need to feel safe and secure. The new moon will be exact on May 6, 2016 at 3:29 pm EDT, 16 degrees Taurus. That’s 12:29 pm Los Angeles, 8:29 pm London, and 5:29 am Sydney on May 7.

New moons are new beginnings. They open up a lunar month that will unfold according to the archetypes seeded in the new moon. And what’s Taurus about? Sweetness. Pleasure. Sensuality. Taurus takes it slow. It enjoys every flavor, smell, and bite. It revels in the bounty of the earth. It surrounds itself with richness. As a result the coming four weeks will take us through our relationship with these themes, from not having enough to overindulgence.

When we look further at the chart, we see that the new moon makes a grand earth trine to Pluto and Jupiter. Think wealth, power, and worldly achievement — although Jupiter in Virgo is very service oriented and a reminder to think of others. So, with that in mind, this is a good month to focus on creating wealth and stability in our lives, to focus on career, and plant the seeds that will enable us to take pleasure in the fruits of our labors.

I should also mention that the Sun and Moon quincunx (150 degrees) Saturn. Although quincunxes are considered a “minor” aspect, I’ve noticed something about them over time — they show a blind spot. And it seems a little telling that as much as we’re all excited for four weeks of good food, good love, and all the happiness that money can buy, a Saturn quincunx is like the credit card bill that puts it all into perspective.

Let’s be careful not to get too carried away this month, as tempting as it may be. We’ll need to take a good look at what we value, both physically and philosophically. Do we value ourselves? Do the things we surround ourselves with reveal a value system gone awry? More importantly, how do we get back to basics?

If we’re beginning something this month or planting a seed, the soil is rich and fecund. But we’ll need to work hard and make sure that what we are creating in the world is in alignment with our true values.
