Happy Cancer New Moon! Happy solar eclipse! This is the time of the year when we not only welcome in new beginnings in all things Cancer — home, family, emotional connection — but we step into a powerful new chapter courtesy of the solar eclipse. This is a time to get back to the heart and soul of life, to cultivate closeness, to focus on what home and family mean to you. With the North Node also in Cancer, it’s imperative that we move away from anything that is blocking the flow of substance to our lives. That said, the new moon is exact on July 2, 2019 at 3:17 pm EDT, 10 degrees Cancer. That’s 12:17 pm Los Angeles, 8:17 pm London, 5:17 am Sydney on July 3.

New moons are new beginnings, but a solar eclipse is like one act of a play ending and the stage hands and acts rushing to rearrange themselves for the next act. New actors are coming in. Others are leaving. The story has moved to a new setting. Perhaps there’s even something dramatic happening.

With a solar eclipse in Cancer, it’s quite possible that the next scene opens in the home. The stage lights are coming back on, the curtain draws. Perhaps were watching a scene in a kitchen. Or one where family members or those who are like family are interacting in a living room. Maybe two people are embracing. The thing about eclipses is that even though we’re spectators, we’re also the actors. It’s as if we’re two things at once. This level of awareness helps us to understand what is unfolding and what the astrology is asking of us right now.

It’s important to also be aware that we’re stepping into a difficult eclipse season. The Cancer New Moon opposes Saturn in Capricorn and Pluto in Capricorn. We have to hold ourselves and others accountable. We have to reconcile the past. We have to connect what has been disconnected. And we’re already feeling these energies unfold; we’ve been feeling them since last month.

What this eclipse season is demanding is that we become aware of how we’re blocking ourselves from what we really want, what we really need, and what we really love. Cancer, as the first water sign, talks about primal energies of creation. Ruled by the Moon, it’s the yin to the Sun’s yang. We need the calming energies of Cancer. Like a balm it soothes. It fills in the spaces between hardness. It feeds us body, mind, and soul. It’s the universal archetype of the Mother.

There’s probably a lot of complicated reasons why we’re not getting what we need. Why we’re starved for affection and gentleness. Maybe it began in childhood. Maybe we’re acculturated to put hard work and duty above anything “weak” or “soft”. While an important sign in the wheel of life, Capricorn, in its negative polarity, can imprison, block, or weigh us down. Worse, we’ve become completely shut off.

How do we open up? These eclipses are battering down our walls. Its showing us where we’ve separated and compartmentalized. We have to have the courage to open ourselves up, with faith, knowing that once there is flow there is life.

Be courageous this eclipse season. Set intentions with this new moon to cry, feel, and embrace. Work on the mother archetype. Feel it on a root or universal level. Mother yourself. Let go of the past. Tend to your roots. Make changes in the home. Reach out to family. Let go of family. Look at where you’re getting in the way of feeling your emotions or opening up to what you really want.

Pluto’s energy in this eclipse season means that we’re having to take a hard look at ourself and the world around us. Pluto is showing us a mirror. But, through recognizing the darkness or shadows within, we can put things back into the light. (I’m teaching a webinar on Pluto on July 13 to take us deeper into this transformative energy. Eclipse season is a powerful portal of change and alchemy. Use it wisely.
