Happy Cancer Full Moon! Happy lunar eclipse! This is the time in the lunar calendar when the spotlight is on emotional connection, family, home, and memory. Cancer is the archetype of the mother. It feeds, cares, and nurtures us. The full moon is exact on January 10, 2020 at 2:21 pm EST, 20 degrees Cancer/Capricorn. That’s 11:21 am Los Angeles, 7:21 pm London, 6:21 am Sydney on January 11, and 8:21 am Auckland.
This eclipse season has been so much about the pull between the old world and the new, a need to break down old structures so that we can open more to something better. We kicked the season off with a Capricorn New Moon solar eclipse on December 26. With a lineup of planets in Capricorn, an unusual amount made even more unusual by the presence of Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn, we have been taking a serious look at our lives and what they are built upon.
Every sign has its highs and lows and Capricorn’s lows can feel oppressive and exhausting. We feel limited. We’re afraid of what’s to come. We see no way out, imprisoned by our duties and responsibilities. We’re overly critical. Nothing is good enough. The South Node of the Moon is in Capricorn, too. Whatever we’re struggling with right now is part of a very old story.
Five planets in Capricorn also means something is out of balance. All this hard Capricorn energy needs softness. It needs the gentle energies of Cancer, the energy of care and empathy, the energy that feels safe.
A lot’s been made of this lunar eclipse. When you look at its chart you may be able to see why just by looking at the lines, the crescent symbol of the moon pulling at a gathering of planets opposite. Why this lunar eclipse has caused some concern is because it not only opposes Saturn but Pluto as well, two heavy hitting planets that when combined are trying to tear things down and expose the shadow parts of ourselves that are no longer supporting us.
Lunar eclipses demand some immediacy. As a result, we may need to take action in the days around the lunar eclipse. We need to face a part of ourselves that we haven’t wanted to face. We may be feeling old emotions come up that need our attention, maybe even something having to do with the past or from childhood. Events may be a bit on the dramatic side. The people around us may not be showing us their best selves.
We shouldn’t fear this full moon, but we should answer its call. It may be time to purge something, from a negative emotional relationship to an addiction. It wants us to open our hearts, bring in more feeling and emotional connection. But we have to look at what fears and closed energies within ourselves is preventing us from getting our emotional needs met.
With Pluto strong in this eclipse, there is a demand that something change and transform. It’s for the good of our soul’s evolution. So, again, we may find that it’s time to let something go in the coming days. Be very present with yourself and your feelings. Keep a journal of what’s coming up so you can reflect back on it later. Further, Uranus turns direct today at 2 degrees Taurus, adding a level of unusualness to this eclipse. Uranus is the great awakener. It shakes us. It shows us a new path. It not only encourages us to leave behind whatever imprisoning us, but it demands that we be our true selves.
The eclipse also makes a trine to Neptune in Pisces. There’s hope for us — hope for compassion, redemption, forgiveness. If Cancer is the mother, then Neptune in Pisces connects us to the Universal Mother. She soothes and she heals. Maybe we can forgive ourselves.
The walls are coming down whether we want them to or not. What do we want to create in this new space?
