Happy Capricorn New Moon! Happy solar eclipse! This is the time in the lunar calendar when we focus on career, ambition, responsibility, achievement, and powerful new beginnings within these themes. Capricorn not only helps us to set goals, but to put in the hard work to achieve them. This new moon is exact on December 26 at 12:13 am EST, 4 degrees Capricorn. That’s 9:13 pm Los Angeles on December 25, 5:13 am London on December 26, 4:13 pm Sydney, and 6:13 pm Auckland.
If new moons are new beginnings, then a solar eclipse is a powerful and lasting new start. As you may know, solar eclipses happen every six months and signal that it’s time for the story of our lives to shift. It’s as if we’re watching a theatrical performance and the curtain pulls up to reveal a new scene and a new cast. The scene before us may even be radically different. Some characters may have exited the stage.
It’s important to understand that eclipses are part of a series that lasts about 18 months. And if you think back to January 5, 2019, we had a Capricorn New Moon solar eclipse that kicked off a significant new story that sent many of us in a new direction. Here we are, a year later, and we’re about to step into the next chapter of the story. (Want a refresher on what part of your life this eclipse will activate? Read my Saturn in Capricorn: Sign by Sign guide.)
Here’s what you need to understand. Capricorn is a sign that demands accountability. It’s the sign of matter and manifestation. It demands that we take a serious look at a particular part of our lives over the next six months. If things are not in order, how will we put them in order? If we set a goal or initiated a powerful new beginning in the last year, what work do will we still have to do to get us closer to our goal? We may be tired and our muscles aching, but we’re still climbing as we go into the new year.
The signature in this round of eclipses is Saturn’s conjunction to Pluto in Capricorn, which is to say that these two heavy weight planets are in the same place in the sky as each other. As the ruler of Capricorn, Saturn’s function is to enforce boundaries and limits and help us learn important lessons that help us grow and mature over time. Saturn wants to build, but with the energy of Pluto in the mix, we’re either tearing down old structures over the coming six months or building something very new, something that permanently alters our course. Look back to January 2019 and the months following for context. (For even more context, this eclipse picks up on a story that began in January 2008, twelve years ago.)
This eclipse also makes a square to Chiron in Aries, which means that we’re entering a time in our lives where we may need to be courageous and have the bravery to move forward with something in the coming months. Chiron can also speak to old stories, the sort of stories that quietly run in the background of our lives, stories around not feeling good enough or being heard, for example. Chiron can reveal a tender spot in our lives, something that we’ve been working on healing for quite some time. (You can learn more about Chiron in On Chiron, Suffering, and Knots or watch the introduction to my Chiron: Healing the Soul webinar.)
The difference between this eclipse and the Capricorn Solar Eclipse in January 2019 is that now Jupiter is in Capricorn. As we tear down old walls and structures, as we clear space for something new to come in, finding the courage to move forward, there may be a big opportunity for us. We have the faith as well as the knowledge that we maybe didn’t have before. Jupiter may also gives us much needed confidence.
That said, do keep in mind that this is what’s called a South Node eclipse, which means that it’s more about the past and letting something go that’s not working or not supporting us versus heading off towards something new.
In short, our lives are taking a turn with this eclipse. It may mean that we have to deal with something from the past (South Node) or a personal story that’s repeatedly come up at different points in our lives (Chiron). And in order to do so, we may have to powerfully clear space (Saturn-Pluto) so that something new can come in. The eclipse also makes a trine to Uranus in Taurus, which means that we may see something pleasantly unexpected or a personal breakthrough in the coming weeks and months.
