Happy Cancer New Moon! This is the time of the year when we turn our attention to some of the more primal human experiences — care, emotional security, feelings, family, memories, the mother. It’s a time when we’re prompted to fill our lives with the things that will bring us sustenance. The new moon will be exact on July 4, 2016 at 7:01 am EDT at 12 degrees Cancer. That’s 4:01 am Los Angeles, 12:01 pm London, and 9:01 pm Sydney.
The water signs can be a bit abstract. They’re subjective, ranging from the personal and intimate to our collective emotional experiences. Take Cancer, for example. It’s the first water sign and, in the horoscope wheel, it forms the foundation of the chart. Like a root it grounds us, feeds us, helps us bring in the experiences that nourishes our life.
Every year we have a Cancer New Moon. Every year we experience a clarion call to get back to basics and the things that will help us grow or feel fulfilled in life. We live in a world that values achievement, notoriety, wealth — things that mean nothing if our life is devoid of substance.
Cancer is substance. It is the element that feeds creation. So, what is going to feed the things you create in life? We’ve moved on from Gemini, a sign of ideas. Now we have to birth these ideas into the world. Welcome to Cancer season.
This new moon, however, is a bit complicated. Falling almost exactly opposite Pluto, over the next four weeks we’re going to have to face our fears, our feelings, our demons, buried memories, painful family dynamics, and our shame. That’s because Pluto works on the causal level; it holds a mirror to our soul, reflecting back all the complicated experiences and emotions that still need resolution, healing. It isn’t easy, but it is necessary for our spiritual evolution.
Because Cancer deals with deeply fundamental experiences and feelings, we’re getting down to our roots this lunar month. Pluto, like an excavator, will show you what’s holding you back, what’s choking out roots, and keeping you from flourishing. Like I said, it’s not easy. Thankfully the new moon makes a strong trine to Neptune. For all the deep shadow work we’re doing we have the opportunity to forgive and heal, to find redemption.
Over the next few weeks be very conscious about how you care and nurture yourself. Take stock of the knots and tangles around home and family. Transform the facets of your soul. Be brave. Pluto will take you to the root.
