Mercury turns retrograde in Aquarius, pivoting on the energies of Saturn and Uranus. Long held ideas may shift. An unexpected opportunity may send us in a new direction. We’re going further into a new life.
There’s a dominant cultural narrative around Mercury Retrograde that Mercury Retrograde equals bad. Life has to grind to a halt. We’re paralyzed to make decisions for three weeks. Everything breaks.
How do we begin to see Mercury Retrograde differently? It’s not that things don’t get a little screwy during Mercury Retrograde — they definitely do — but we need to understand that all planets, except for the Sun and the Moon, turn retrograde. Mercury just does it more frequently.
Retrogrades are a yin phase. They pull in. It’s receptive instead of active. Mercury Retrograde is no different, inviting us to change our relationship with how we think, perceive, analyze, communicate, and even make choices. (Sometimes I think some of the bad press around retrogrades unconsciously connects with our complicated collective relationship with yin or feminine energy.)
Over the next three weeks, we will likely have to make choices and decisions, sign papers, and head off in new directions in spite of Mercury Retrograde. (I’ve both ended major relationships and made moves during Mercury Retrograde.) If we do, be flexible. Connect to our intuition instead of our mental mind. Be open to a different approach. Be prepared to pick up the thread again once Mercury turns direct on February 3 at 24 degrees Capricorn.
