Mercury turns retrograde at 22 Pisces, commencing a three-week rewind on how we think and learn, communicate and listen. As the planet of choice, Mercury gives us the chance to weigh our options and consider other opportunities that we may have missed.
In astrology, Mercury is the “ruler” of the signs of Gemini and Virgo. This duality reveals how we both take in information through Gemini and how we analyze it through Virgo. Gemini is the yang or active expression of Mercury and Virgo is the yin or receptive expression of Mercury. Although a technical point, it helps us to understand Mercury and, as a result, its retrograde.
While Mercury is retrograde, we need to reconsider and review. Mercury changes its energy from active to receptive. It is a reminder that we can’t always rush forward or consume information without a process of reflection.
The retrograde in particular adds an element of karmic work. Is there something that we need to go back to and try again? Or is there something unfinished and unresolved? Perhaps this is why people from our past have a habit popping back up, right on cue, during Mercury Retrograde.
Pisces is also a sign that is well-worn territory of late. We’ve just ended three years of Saturn in Pisces (March 7, 2023 to February 13, 2026) and we had eclipses in Pisces on September 17, 2024 and September 7, 2025. Whatever Pisces governs in our astrology — it could be career, relationships, family, for example — will need a second look.
Finally, Mercury Retrograde in Pisces is an invitation to reconsider how we use our intuition. After all, classically speaking, Mercury is not at home in Pisces. Its natural mental faculties and sharp analysis instead are expressed by feeling and emotion. In a world that is saturated with information and distraction, do we take the time to slow down and to listen to our inner voice?
