Venus trades Libra for Scorpio, the familiar for the unfamiliar. If Venus is the planet of relationship, then its time in Scorpio takes us into intimate and sometimes uncomfortable spaces. It reveals the importance of trust and the alchemy of emotional vulnerability.

Traditionally speaking, Venus is in its “detriment” in Scorpio because Venus takes on the energy of Mars, Scorpio’s ruling planet. And Mars and Venus are at odds, at least from the view of classical astrology.

Although a technical point, it’s important to understand how through “rulership” planets take on certain energies when they travel through the zodiac. Does this mean that Venus in Scorpio is “bad”? Of course not. It just means that Venus has to adapt and work in a way that is counter to its nature.

Normally demure and accommodating, Venus instead picks up on the emotional intensity of Scorpio and courage of Mars. It can fearlessly navigate the psyche, it can hold emotional space for people going through difficult times, it values honesty and commitment, it will invest in relationships with depth.

But there is a shadow side to Venus in Scorpio, like all planets in all signs. Here Venus can be obsessive. Relationships can pull into darker themes. Our connections can be transaction, toxic, manipulative, and even abusive.

There’s a line we have to navigate with Venus and Scorpio, to use the energy to create stronger emotional relationships, but to also look at current partnerships where the connection pulls us down instead of up.
