Welcome to the Sagittarius New Moon. This is the time in the zodiac calendar when our attention turns towards the horizon. Sagittarius inspires us to look outwardly and to seek answers. It’s the sign of knowledge and wisdom, travel and exploration. The new moon is exact on December 4, 2021 at 2:43 am EST, 12 degrees Sagittarius. That’s 11:43 pm Los Angeles on December 3, 7:43 am London on December 4, 8:43 am Johannesburg, 6:43 pm Sydney, and 8:43 pm Auckland.
New moons are new beginnings and this one happens to be a solar eclipse, which means that we’re not only opening up a new lunar month, one that will unfold over the next four weeks, but we’re stepping into a six month arc of time. And yet this eclipse is the last in a series of Sagittarius eclipses that have been occurring since June 2020.
In this nexus of time, events can occur. People can come in and out of our lives. Our proverbial star can rise and fall. Our lives can turn in an instant. There’s a reason the lunar nodes, which give us eclipses, are known for being the axis of fate. They strike a chord that can reverberate over the coming day, weeks, and months.
What we do know is that we’re personally and collectively working through the archetype of Sagittarius over the coming months, which is to say, finding our truth, searching for meaning, and figuring out what we stand for. Sagittarius is the sign of wisdom of knowledge. But what Scorpio Season taught us is that wisdom is forged through life’s deeper, more important moments.
The thing to keep in mind is that this is what’s called a South Node eclipse. There’s karma to work through, the stickier times that we’ve been convinced that we were right, that our truth was the Truth. This Sagittarius New Moon asks us to be open, to reconsider, and to see things from a different perspective.
So, what do we do? Do we search the world? Try on new philosophies? Travel to other lands? Rediscover our faith? Maybe it all feels a bit hard at the moment. Then again, that’s the work.
With Jupiter, the ruler of the new moon, in Aquarius, whatever we’re personally and collectively navigating over the coming days and weeks speaks to the role of friends and community in our lives. So much of the last year and a half as been about a lack of friends and community or a struggle to redefine the role that people play in our lives during a global pandemic.
Jupiter also squares Mars in the chart of the new moon. Something demands our attention. We need to take action. We have choices to make or options to weigh. We may receive news that hits at a deep point. There may be something currently hidden that will reveal itself once Mars arrives in Sagittarius on December 13.
The new moon also squares Neptune in Pisces, recently direct at 20 degrees, a subtle reminder that there are greater events at play. And while we may feel distant from one another at times, we’re all connected by a universal thread.
Note that this is eclipse is part of a cycle that opened on June 5, 2020 followed by December 14, 2020 and June 10, 2021. This eclipse repeats the same degree as one from December 4, 2002.
I did a deep dive on these eclipses in a recent webinar, The Eclipses of November & December 2021, which you can now get for 50% off with the code ECLIPSE.
