Happy New Moon in Leo! Another lunar cycle begins. This is the time of the year when we set our intentions for new beginnings that support our joy. It is through the sign of Leo that we learn about identity, creative expression, the arts, romance, risk, and that sense of pleasure we get from being ourselves unfettered. The new moon is exact at 5:51 pm EDT, August 6, 2013, at 14 degrees Leo.
What I immediately noticed about the new moon chart is how close the Sun and Moon are to the middle of Leo. In astrology there are certain degrees that have a bit of oomph, charged in a way that a planet on that degree carries significance. Fifteen degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) signal the halfway point between the solstice and the equinox. These points in the calendar, known as cross quarter days, were celebrated by the ancients with festivals and rituals. They were a mark of transition both seasonal and spiritual.
Fifteen degrees of Leo is the midpoint of Summer, a time of harvest and celebration, yet preparation for the coming season. So as we look at the chart, ask yourself — What am I harvesting? What am I transitioning into? How am I preparing for the next season?
As mentioned previously, Leo is the sign where we form identity, especially identity as it is separate from the family (Cancer). The new moon is a reminder we need to celebrate the things that make us unique no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. When we hold ourselves back, we deny the world the fullness of our light. Yes, there’s risk involved. It means putting ourselves out there on the stage and making ourselves vulnerable, but we must be the example to others that it is okay to be ourselves. Otherwise we’re just keeping the old fear structure going. Use this lunar cycle to cultivate applause, to be in the spotlight, and add a little color and sparkle to the clothes we normally hide out in.
The Sun and Moon’s trine to Uranus in the chart shows that we may need to get radical. If we’ve been holding back our light and our joy, Uranus is a breath of fresh air. It liberates us from our fears and the pressure to be conventional. It’s outsized and outre. And an aspect to Uranus pulls in the influence of the ongoing Uranus/Pluto Square, revealing another facet in our unfolding evolution.
Also worth mentioning that the new moon squares the lunar nodes. There is a spiritual imperative to this need to liberate the identity. It’s a crucial step in our soul’s evolution. In addition, the chart is lacking the element of air. It’s as if everything has stopped moving. The cosmic jukebox has abruptly stopped playing as we take the stage. All eyes are on us. Normally we would be lost in the crowd, but now we are on the stage. Time to show the world who we really are.
