Welcome to the Libra New Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when our attention turns to relationship and connection, negotiation and compromise, beauty and harmony. As the sign of the scales, Libra teaches us to put everything into balance. The new moon will be exact on October 21, 2025 at 8:25 am ET, 28 degrees Libra. That’s 5:28 am Los Angeles, 1:25 pm London, 2:25 pm Johannesburg, 5:55 pm New Delhi, 11:25 pm Sydney, and 1:25 am Auckland on October 22.
New moons are new beginnings. They bring renewal and reset. They turn the page and we enter into a new chapter that will span the next four weeks. Our focus is both on Libra and its energies as well as the area of our astrology that Libra governs.
The previous lunar month began with a solar eclipse on September 21, which is why September was a time of change for some or a time of personal events and milestones. While we are out of eclipse season with this new moon, we will use the coming weeks to bring into reality the seeds of new beginnings planted by the solar eclipse.
A Libra New Moon is a time to focus on the relationships in our lives. Of course, not all of us are in a romantic relationship, but as human beings we are social creatures. Relationship comes in many forms, from our ability to socialize well with others to the various connections that build our lives. While Libra isn’t the sign of friendship and community (Aquarius is), it is the sign that builds it.
Libra is ruled by the planet Venus, a reminder that in life we need to learn to be attentive to the needs of others. Libra stands in opposition to Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, a sign ruled by Mars. Life can’t be so Aries that we become hyper individualistic and self-reliant.
Traditional astrology says that Saturn finds its exaltation in Libra. Which is to say, Saturn, the planet of structure and commitment, does its best work in Libra, the sign of relationship and compromise. Through this we find some pretty sound advice: relationship and compromise is fundamental to building a well structured life.
Who are the people in your life? Do you find it hard to connect with others or easy? Do you need to restore balance to a situation or find new openings for negotiation? The Libra New Moon is both a refocus to help answer these questions, but to also create new potentials.
This is an especially strong new moon because Venus, the ruler of Libra, is in Libra. It gives dominance to Libra in the next four weeks. Peace. Harmony. Consideration. We may struggle to find peace in our own lives, but there is a great opportunity if we take it. Venus says that there is always a solution that will help to put a matter in order. (The sign before Libra is Virgo. When things are in order we can have harmony.)
When we look to the chart of the new moon we don’t find any overtly challenging aspects. There is, however, an opposition to Chiron in Aries. Over the next four weeks we may have to work on healing an old pain point around relationships. For example this could be something about not sticking up for ourselves or the times when our wants and desires were not considered. A square to Jupiter is a push for us to transcend the past, to go beyond ourselves so that we may open up to new horizons.
