Welcome to the Leo New Moon, the time in the zodiac calendar when our attention turns to the Sun. Leo is the archetype that brings us back to ourselves, our vitality, and what lights up our lives. It’s the creative spark of the Divine that lives within. The new moon is exact on July 28, 2022 at 1:55 pm ET, 5 degrees Leo. That’s 10:55 am Los Angeles, 6:55 pm London, 7:55 pm Johannesburg, 3:55 am Sydney on July 29, and 5:55 am Auckland.
New moons are new beginnings, a time when the page turns and our lives unfold through the lens and archetype that the new moon falls in. In Cancer, the new moon revealed our lives through the subconscious, memory, emotion, and instinct. In Leo, however, the new moon makes for a dynamic new beginning, one lived through creativity, self expression, joy, and passion.
I think we need to separate our cultural expectation of what Leo is as a sign versus the vital role it plays energetically in the zodiac. As the sign of the Sun, Leo takes the spark of Aries, the first fire sign, and gives us color and personality. Leo also inspires us to discover the light within ourselves and do something with it. Leo wants us to make our lives an art, to take that light within and put it into everything we do. Leo reminds us that there’s only one of us in the world and to honor that gift of individuality.
Of course, there’s two sides to every zodiac sign and, as a result, we may be challenged by personality conflicts, selfish behavior, or something that challenges our individuality. With that in mind, how do we find balance? A way to honor ourselves and our existential spark while recognizing that we’re a spark of many sparks, a light of many lights?
Maybe we’re burnt out and we need a refresh. The Leo New Moon gives us the opportunity to make space for fun as well as the things that nourish our spirit as well as our soul.
But there’s some challenging astrology in this new moon.
First, the new moon marks the midpoint of the eclipse cycle, acting like a bridge between the Taurus solar eclipse of April 30 and the Scorpio solar eclipse on October 25. It’s often around the midpoint of the eclipses that we see major events as well as stories come in. All we have to do is look back at February 2022 and August-September 2021, previous eclipse midpoints, for reference.
Second, the new moon activates the energies of Mars and Uranus in Taurus and their conjunction to the North Node of the Moon as well as Saturn in Aquarius. This is powerful energy that brings us into August, a month that may bring structural changes. A story of reinvention comes to a head, one that began in May 2018, March 2019. We may head in a new direction or events may awaken us to something new.
Perhaps it’s a blessing that the Sun and Moon receive support from Jupiter, a planet that encourages us to keep the faith. If there is something challenging that we’re navigating in the coming four weeks, it may likely have a silver lining.
Nevertheless, the coming weeks, until the Virgo New Moon on August 27, will likely be dynamic, challenging, bold, courageous, adventurous, and unexpected. We just can’t forget to be ourselves.
