Welcome to the Cancer New Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when we turn our attention to home and family. As a cardinal water sign, Cancer governs our most primal emotional needs, to feel cared for, loved, and connected. It’s also memories and the past. The Cancer Full Moon is exact on July 14, 2026 at 5:43 am ET, 21 degrees. That’s 2:43 am Los Angeles, 10:43 am London, 11:43 am Johannesburg, 3:13 pm New Delhi, 7:43 pm Sydney, and 9:43 pm Auckland.
New moons are new beginnings. They set the stage for the coming four weeks, acting like a lens for a key area of our lives. Since the new moon is in Cancer, the fourth sign of the zodiac, our collective experiences into mid August will center around home and family as well as the emotional themes that Cancer is known for. The position of the planets at the time of the new moon will act as a framework for our experiences.
Overall, a Cancer New Moon is an invitation for us to renew our relationship with some of the most fundamental parts of our lives — home and family. For one person, the next four weeks may be centered around the home, from making changes to the home to even packing up to move. For another, this lunar month may be emotional or even philosophical, asking the question, “Where is home and who is home?”
While Cancer symbolically reflects the physicality and location of home, it’s equally our emotional roots, that invisible cord that connects us through our past, memories, subconscious, and even our ancestors. Ruled by the Moon, Cancer also puts us in connection with the substance of life and our primal needs to be cared and nurtured by this substance.
If a new moon sets a stage, then the position of the planets at the time of the new moon will shape our experiences over the coming four weeks. In the chart of the new moon we find the Sun and Moon alongside Mercury Retrograde, also in Cancer. This hints that we may have to revisit a matter from the past, especially around home, family, and emotional care and connection. A retrograde is always a thread that takes us back to something unresolved.
We also find Saturn square both Mercury and the Sun and Moon. Saturn makes for a notable influence, setting us up for a lunar month that may demand more from us in terms of stepping into greater duties and responsibilities or even setting boundaries with family or loved ones. Saturn is a planet that often follows alongside personal events that I call “Capital L life” — achievements, milestones, commitments, and transitions.
So, this may not be a gentle lunar month for some, but one where we have to put plans into motion, take command of a situation, put things into order, or see the result of our choices. For a few, the second half of July may be a reality check. And Cancer being Cancer, this may bring emotions as well as events around home and family.
This is also a lunar month that comes just before a lunar month on August 12 that will begin with a solar eclipse. Again and again I see that the weeks before a solar eclipse are often pivotal. Meaning, in some cases, we won’t have to wait until August to see what this eclipse will mean for us, especially if we are a Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio, or Taurus.
That said, with Saturn as our guide, use the coming days and weeks to put new structures in place, to streamline, to honor our commitments, to set healthy boundaries, and forge deeper and lasting connections with loved ones.
