Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio and we begin our 40 day journey into the underworld. It’s a time of reflection, of alchemical change. We’re reassessing what we love, what we value. Relationships are crucial right now as is how we treat and respect each other.

Venus isn’t at home in the sign of Scorpio. Normally demure and accommodating, it’s pointed and fierce. It values emotional honesty and intimacy. It rallies in a crisis and empowers. It can wield sexuality and charm like a weapon. It cuts through artifice. In Scorpio, Venus acts like Mars.

Each planet in astrology is like a key to understanding ourselves and the world we live it. In particular, Venus and Mars speak are relationship planets and they need to be in balance. Too much Venus and we’re overly accommodating to the point a people walking all over us. Too much Mars and we’re overly aggressive and unable to negotiate or understand the needs of others.

Over the coming 40 days, until Venus turns direct on November 16, we’re taking a second look at how we do Venus, which is to say how we accommodate, negotiate, understand, and relate to one another. Since Venus is in Scorpio, a sign that speaks to the psyche and the powerful emotional underpinnings that motivate us, we’re looking at the deeper or hidden side of relationships over the coming weeks. This means revisiting our secrets, our shame, how we negotiate intimacy, how we let ourselves be vulnerable. Venus Retrograde in Scorpio is a karmic look at power in our relationships, pushing us to heal, release, and transform any partnership that is not working, especially our intimate partnership. In astrology it’s easy to equate Venus with women in general, but I think it’s important to realize is that everyone on this planet has a Venus and it’s doubly important right now for us to take awareness of how we use and express it, push it away or embrace it. This is a retrograde to find balance between and integrate.

In other news, it’s a Virgo Moon weekend. Perfect for projects, volunteering, and anything that helps us focus on our health and wellness. We’re also in the dark of the moon this weekend, so we’re wrapping up instead of starting new. The next lunar month begins on October 8 with a Libra New Moon that will make a powerful square to Pluto and activate our Venus Retrograde story for the coming lunar month.

PS — I’m honored to be co-teaching again at the Collective Universal Reality Integrative Workshop here in Manhattan, October 26-28.
