Jupiter turns retrograde in Capricorn, marking the last in a series of three retrogrades that began this week. Retrogrades are a time of reflection and integration instead of action. For Jupiter, it’s time for us to rework our faith as well as what we believe in.
When I was learning astrology the word that was always used to describe Jupiter was “growth”. As in, Jupiter is the planet of growth. But I went on to discover that “growth” only begins to describe Jupiter.
Jupiter is the planet that encourages us to learn and grow beyond ourselves. It inspires us to see the world. It motivates us to search for answers, wisdom, and truth. As the ruler of Sagittarius, Jupiter speaks to religion, higher education, and exploration. As the ruler of Pisces, Jupiter speaks to spirituality, mysticism, and finding answers within. All these things help us grow, but in more intangible ways.
Jupiter’s been in Capricorn since December 2, 2019 and today’s retrograde marks the farthest it will reach into the sign before returning at the end of 2020. While in Capricorn, we’ve been exploring the world — its structures, its limits. With Pluto near by, we’ve been examining deeper themes around power and control. We’ve also been tearing down and transforming old beliefs or old ways of seeing things. We’ve had to scale up our ambitions while facing everything that has been holding us back. In Capricorn, the growth is tangible even when we’re tearing things down.
It’s quite common for outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — to be retrograde for nearly half the year. So Jupiter’s long retrograde, until September 12, is merely a four month period of integrating all the things we’ve learned since December.
For me, the two month quarantine here in New York City has been a time of unbelievable growth, growth that’s been seismic as Jupiter made its conjunction to Pluto on April 4. I was reflecting this morning in my daily meditations how much has shifted during this time and how much I am grateful for my own situation. Hopefully there has been growth for you as well, perhaps in an unexpected way.
