Welcome to the Aquarius New Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when the page turns to friends and community, society and humanity. As the penultimate sign of the zodiac, Aquarius brings us into the larger social structures and systems that run our world. The Aquarius New Moon is exact on February 9, 2024 at 5:59pm ET, 20 degrees. That’s 2:29 pm Los Angeles, 10:59 pm London, 12:35 am on February 10, 4:05 am New Delhi, 9:35 am Sydney, 11:35 am Auckland.

New moons are new beginnings. The sign that the new moon falls in sets the stage, revealing the players and themes that we will navigate personally and collectively over the following four weeks. We plant our seeds. We set our intentions. Sometimes we have to wait a week until the first-quarter moon to see what this new period is all about.

What is Aquarius? It’s a sign that is often misunderstood. We have to strip away some of the pop-culture, Age of Aquarius veneer to see the sign for what it is — an air sign governed by Saturn.

As the final air sign, Aquarius takes us out of the one-on-one and into the group. It’s larger systems of connection, whether through our community and social circle to much larger systems like nationality and ethnicity. It’s also social issues and social causes, humanity and the collective.

We had a lot of time to sit with Aquarius over the last few years. After all, Saturn was in Aquarius from March 2020 until March 2023. We learned in very real ways all about systems and networks, society and humanity, the very things that Aquarius governed in astrology.

Even though Saturn has moved on, it’s worth framing today’s new moon around some of the broader topics that sat in the forefront of our minds from 2020-2023. The coming days and weeks may push us out into our community, get us to redefine who our friends are, make investments in the people who matter, get involved in a social issue or cause, or open up our eyes to the future.

Speaking of Saturn, the planet of structure and organization is in Pisces, which brings the energy of today’s new moon to the last sign of the zodiac, the sign that dissolves the very limits and boundaries that Saturn naturally builds. We’re straddling the worlds with this new moon, finding the balance between the tangible and rational with the immaterial and intuitive. How do we align the head and the heart?

Then there’s Pluto. As of January 20, Pluto is back in Aquarius, the start of a major 20-year chapter. While this new moon has a bit of distance from Pluto, they’re both occupying the same sign. It’s worth observing any shifts in the Aquarius department — friends and community, humanitarian themes and social causes — as well as the area of our lives where Pluto now resides. (See Pluto in Aquarius: Sign by Sign.)

Then there’s Uranus. The planet of shakeups and reinventions is not only newly direct in the sky, having come out of its retrograde on January 27, but it’s making a tight square to the Aquarius New Moon. There may be a demand for reinvention. We may see a new path illuminated for us. There may be twists and turns. With Uranus, always expect the unexpected.

In short, use the coming days and weeks to reevaluate and reprioritize friendships and community, to focus on the larger issues in life. But be prepared to leave the past behind in order to step into something new.
