Welcome to the Sagittarius New Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when our attention turns to the world. Sagittarius is a fire sign and it inspires and motivates us to look outward, whether through education and travel or philosophy and religion, so we can grow. The new moon will be exact on December 19, 2025 at 8:44 pm ET, 28 degrees of Sagittarius. That’s 5:44 pm Los Angeles, 1:44 am London (December 20), 3:44 am Johannesburg, 7:14 am New Delhi, 12:44 pm Sydney, and 2:44 pm Auckland.
New moons are new beginnings. They turn the page. They shift our focus. The coming four weeks will be through a different lens, one that helps us to learn and discover. In the zodiac, each sign builds upon the next, like a ladder of evolution. If Scorpio was the look within, sometimes bracingly so, Sagittarius is the knowledge and sometimes wisdom that is born from that inward search.
Why am I here? What is the meaning and purpose of my life? Symbolically, without Sagittarius and its ruling planet Jupiter, we wouldn’t ask big questions. For Sag, the search for answers takes us into the world, into higher education and the degrees that come with it, into places of worship and the beliefs that come with it.
Twenty-eight degrees Sagittarius, the degree of the new moon, also aligns with a very curious part of the zodiac — the Galactic Center, the very center of our Milky Way galaxy. To look to the ribbon of stars that form the Milky Way, is to look towards a region of space that planet is tethered to. That is also where we find the constellation of Sagittarius. Perhaps the big answers we’re looking for are not on this planet.
Yes, with a Sagittarius New Moon, the next four weeks will be very worldly (or otherworldly) in focus. But there are different influences with this new moon that hint that the next four weeks are more about soul searching in nature.
In the chart of the new moon, for example, take Jupiter in Cancer. Jupiter rules the new moon because Jupiter is the ruler of Sagittarius. Currently Jupiter is in Cancer, which is to say that Cancer receives the energy of the new moon. For as much as Sagittarius takes us to the furthest reaches of our planet and beyond, Cancer brings us right back home. It turns our attention to family, towards the past and memories, it stirs our emotions. Sagittarius expands our vision. Jupiter in Cancer expands our desire to grow through emotional connection and time in the home.
Then there’s Saturn and Neptune in Pisces. They square the new moon, a major aspect that will color our experiences over the next four weeks. A square is a point of friction. Something wants to come into manifestation. And a Saturn square is a push for us to make serious decisions, put things in order, be more mature, and hold ourselves and others accountable. A Neptune square, however, amps up the soul searching. Our emotions as well as existential questions may feel amplified in the coming days and weeks.
Keep in mind that both Saturn and Neptune are at the end of Pisces and, thus, at the end of cycles that began in 2023 and 2012 respectively. Whatever events that transpire in the coming lunar month weaves its way into the larger lessons we have been learning with Saturn and Neptune in Pisces.
Importantly, the new moon also comes three months after a solar eclipse at 29 Virgo on September 21. They are linked even though they are separated by time. Often the seeds of a solar eclipse take three months to show themselves. And the new moon that falls three months after a solar eclipse (and three months before the next solar eclipse) acts as a powerful turning point. Which is to say that we should expect ripples of eclipse energy over the next two weeks.
Finally, we have support in this new moon. Jupiter makes a trine to Saturn and Neptune. There are answers to be had, but we have to be willing to go deep within.
