Happy Virgo New Moon! Happy solar eclipse! This is the time of the year when we not only turn our attention to Virgo themes of purity, service, organization, and work, but we pivot our lives through the energy of the eclipse. Like striking a new hour, eclipses signal that it’s time to make a change. And with that, we’ll all be getting clean, getting our lives in order, and paying attention to the details this month. The new moon solar eclipse will be exact on September 1, 2016 at 5:03 am EDT and9 degrees Virgo. That’s 2:03 am Los Angeles, 10:03 am London, and 7:03 pm in Sydney. First, let’s explain some astronomy/astrology basics. On the astronomy side of things, eclipses happen every sixth months and they occur when the new or full moon makes a connection to the ecliptic — aka the path the earth takes around the Sun. On the astrology side of things, eclipses are agents of change. They have a reputation for fated or karmic events, the sort that stand out against the timeline of our life. That said, eclipses aren’t bad; they merely move forward the narrative, whether it’s a new job, a baby, a marriage, or a major event that alters the course of our life. As a result, the story will change this month.

When a solar eclipse falls in sign, it activates the archetype of the sign, setting forth events that will play out over the next six months until the next round of eclipses. So, what can we expect from a Virgo solar eclipse? New beginnings in health, how we take care of our body, our diet. We may need to purify our life, bring in new rituals, get sober, and get real. Virgo is also the sign of work, from projects to the mundane details that power our daily life. There’s a fastidiousness to Virgo and, as a result, we’ll need to apply Virgo’s editorial eye to various areas of our life.

That said, the eclipse will activate a tight configuration between Neptune, Mars, and Saturn — three planets that speak to provocative events that are out of our control, a need to surrender, and a need to take a major step in life. This isn’t easy astrology. It says that the next six months will likely alter our course in some way. Neptune especially touches on themes of sacrifice, release, redemption, and the needs of the divine. But, as always, a complex brew of astrology is always fuel for personal growth and evolution. Even with Virgo’s push to take control and get organized, Neptune and Saturn merely say that whatever we create in our lives now, whatever we seek to make a change, it has to be in harmony with something larger than us.

We’re at a crossroads. I think September is a time when we’re surveying our lives and see what needs help. Maybe this is the month we reach for a miracle? Maybe this is a month that will test our faith? Maybe we’re going deeper down the rabbit hole in search of answers? Whatever we find will be very different than what we expected.
