Happy Leo New Moon! Happy solar eclipse! This is a time in the lunar calendar when we turn our attention to themes of identity, self expression, creativity, and passion. New moons are new beginnings and this one will set us on a path for the coming six months, one that will likely bring a change in direction for many. The Leo New Moon will be exact on August 21, 2017 at 2:30 pm EDT, 28 degrees Leo. That’s 11:30 am Los Angeles, 7:30 pm London, and 4:30 am in Sydney on August 22.

Eclipses happen like clockwork. Every six months, when the new and full moon like up with the ecliptic, we experience a solar and lunar eclipse respectively. Eclipses strike the hour. They usher in a new phase, a new energetic prism of time that we live through over the ensuing months.

The thing about eclipses is that they can coincide with life’s inevitable twists and turns. As the agents of fate, they activate different parts of our astrological chart. And, depending on the planets involved, we can see eclipses coincide with personal milestones like marriages, moves, and career changes … as well as accidents and sudden changes in status. It’s not uncommon for things to be “eclipsed” or removed from our lives during this time. People in positions of power can quickly rise up or fall down as well.

There’s been a lot of hype around this eclipse, deservedly so. Here in the United States the eclipse cuts a swath across the country, dividing north and south and exposing existing psychic and emotional fault lines. As an aside, I think it’s important for everyone, especially those in the States, to be in quiet contemplation during the eclipse. An eclipse is a vortex of energy that can move and shake, especially the unseen fault lines within us. It’s a moment in time when the Sun is partially or totally obscured by the Moon. Light becomes dark, conscious becomes unconscious. It’s a catalyst, a trigger.

Conjunct Mars and activating a Grand Fire Trine with Saturn and Uranus, this eclipse packs a potent punch. Fire energy moves fast. So do eclipses. A trine, let alone a Grand Trine, opens up the energy of action, inspiration, and vision. Uranus opens us to new consciousness. Saturn touches on themes of faith and belief. Mars in Leo is very self motived — motivated to express who it is. In the best light, this eclipse opens us the potential to really discover who we are. And life may rearrange itself quickly to do so.

I think there’s a lot of potential with this eclipse — potential to do something positive if and only if we really use this fast moving energy for something good. This can be working for unity and cooperation to gaining the courage we need to make positive changes in our lives. I also get the sense that life is very “pregnant” right now, as if just thinking of something or wishing for something can bring it quickly into manifestation. But it’s easy to use this energy for selfish reasons or unconsciously manifest something based on negative thought patterns. Try to take the time to mediate on what you want to create in the coming months.

Be brave, be you. The world is going through a difficult passage. Find strength and bravery within yourself to help build something better.
