Happy New Moon in Cancer! This is the time of the year when we set our intentions for new beginnings that support our emotional health. It is through the sign of Cancer that we learn about family, nostalgia, roots, the mother, and we cultivate a sense of belonging. This new moon is exact 3:14 am EDT, July 8, at 16 degrees of Cancer.
Since June there are two stories — two very distinct stories — at play in the heavens right now. First is the intense pressure of the Uranus/Pluto Square, churning us through meat grinder and rearranging the individual particles into something new. The other is the growing Grand Water Trine, which is funneling a very soft, emotional, heart supportive energy into the collective. These energies couldn’t be any more different.
By now were old hat with the Uranus/Pluto Square; we’ve been dealing with it for the last year or so. And this lunation is yet another contraction in an ongoing birth process. (Make that rebirth process.) And the Cancer New Moon, as it opposes Pluto and squares Uranus, so eloquently describes this birthing process that we’ve been undergoing — a birth under duress and one that feels like a gun is pointed at our head.
In the chart of the new moon, the Sun/Moon conjunction forms and opposition to Pluto. There is a confrontation coded in this lunation. In evolutionary astrology, Pluto represents the soul’s urge for incarnation and the degree opposite represents where the soul is learning to balance out the other sign and move forward into new territory. Any planet that forms an opposition to Pluto is the focus of intense evolutionary pressure.
And so the Sun and Moon in Cancer, in addition to a retrograde Mercury, opposes Pluto in Capricorn in this new noon. We are moving away from Capricorn, it’s castles, monuments, and the burdens that come with them and towards Cancer — lovely kind and caring Cancer. With this polarity we are reminded that it can get lonely out there and we need to sustain our worldly efforts with the nourishment of family, close emotional connections, and affection.
Thus we are urged with this lunation to rediscover our hearts and our emotional source. Mercury in aspect to the new moon is also a reminder that we need to speak up and share what is in our hearts. Too often we devalue our emotional needs for fear of being rejected. The retrograde also asks us to reevaluate our emotional process, especially the process that we have inherited from our family.
But with Jupiter moving into orb and linking up with Saturn and Neptune, we get a glimpse of this summer’s marquee event, the Grand Water Trine. If you’ve been feeling rather kicked about by the Uranus/Pluto Square, Jupiter in Cancer and the watery influx can feel like an oasis after a long desert crossing. It as if so much land has been cleared over the last couple of years that the water is the rain needed to nourish the seeds planted amongst the destruction. Let your heart open this summer.
Other things to note are an unaspected Mars in Gemini, which unleashes a torrent of unexpressed words and emotions. Venus in Leo is not only square the nodes, but is at the apex of a yod. It is imperative for a take a risk with this new moon, especially risks involving romance and relationships. The square to the nodes warns us about being lazy and overly self-centered or even a bit of a diva.
Finally, Saturn is stationing in this chart having just turned direct. When the planets stations its energy is unusually strong and with Saturn trining Neptune we have a magical opportunity to manifest the invisible into material — our dreams into reality. Saturn in aspect to Neptune is the great manifester. Add a heaping scoop of Jupiter and our only limit is our imagination.
This is a magical time.
