Happy New Moon in Aries! This is the time of the month when we plant our seeds for powerful new beginnings as Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and the one that corresponds with the season of Spring in the northern hemisphere. Think green shoots and a spark of renewal. This new moon is at 20 degrees Aries and occurs on 4/10/2013 at 5:35 am EDT.

After a heavy Libra Full Moon with many exact and tense aspects, this new moon is interesting because it has shifted the focus — intensely so — to the tight conjunction of the Sun and Moon with Venus and Mars. Aries is home turf for Mars and thus is the final dispositor not only for the lunation, but the chart itself (excluding Neptune and modern rulerships). Therefore the energy is concentrated in Aries and Aries alone.

When we think of the archetype of Aries, many concepts come to mind — the warrior, masculinity, fighting, aggression, impetuousness, action, spark, vitality, birth, and the individual. So with the new moon, we are setting intentions and planting seeds that support the Aries archetype. What is it that you want to renew? Where are you heeding a powerful call to action? Locate 20 degrees Aries in your natal chart and the house will indicate the inception of powerful new beginnings — beginnings that won’t flourish until full moon two weeks later and the Aries Full Moon in September 2013.

Not only is the new moon a seeding of the masculine and feminine energies, but we have a Mars/Venus conjunction too. Mars and Venus contacts speak to relationships and especially sex. So, again, there are powerful procreative forces at work here. What is it that you want to birth? Be specific. Direct the energies. This is an auspicious time to set new intentions for relationship and sexuality, especially more active and empowered expressions of the feminine archetype as normally peace loving Venus is in warrior-like Aries.

It’s also important to mention that while the new moon is out of orb for the Uranus/Pluto square, Pluto is stationing direct and will turn retrograde on Friday, 4/12. When a planet stations, the archetype of that planet saturates the collective. Think of the times when Mercury stations and we’re forced to pay attention to just how we’re communicating and getting from Point A to Point B. Therefore with Pluto stationing, we’re being confronted with Plutonian elements — our shadow, death-like endings, unconditional surrender, and the devils that we’ve long empowered.

As this new moon speaks to new beginnings, this could be a potent lunation to harness the transformative and alchemical powers of Pluto. But first we must face our fears, our terrors, and our shadow. If relationship is a mirror, what are the aspects of self that we are straining to avoid? What would we rather disown or disavow. If we look into the mirror deeply and honestly, we are forever transformed, realizing that our tormentors were our creations all along.

As an aside, this new moon also conjuncts the planet Eris. While our understanding of Eris within the context of astrology is evolving as it was only discovered in 2005, I’m curious to see how Eris will play out within this lunation. As I’ve come to understand, Eris speaks to a massive restructuring that upsets the pre-existing order or hierarchy. Time will tell.
