Happy Cancer Full Moon! This is the time of the year when the spotlight turns to home, family, roots, and emotional connections. As the archetype of the mother, this full moon we’ll be called to take a look at how we were nurtured and cared for as well as how we care and nurture others. The full moon will be exact on December 25, 2015 at 6:12 am EST, 3 degrees Cancer/Capricorn. For those further afield, that’s 3:12 am Los Angeles, 11:12 am London, and 10:12 pm Sydney.
All signs are complicated in their own way, but Cancer is the first water sign, the primal source of emotion and substance. It’s the mother. The ocean. The Moon. The nest. In astrology it rules the breasts and the stomach. Cancer is also a sign deeply rooted in the past. Like a box of old photographs and random bits of ephemera from days gone past, Cancer finds emotional security in nostalgia.
It’s curious that this time of year is when we return home, eat the foods that bring us comfort, and gather close to the people we love. It’s also a complex time of year. Often there isn’t a place for people to return to. Home may even be a four letter word, a place of painful memories and disappointment. Or, we acutely feel the absence of connection and the people who are no longer in our lives.
If full moons are decision points and a time when we see things for what they really are, we may be examining the past. What are we still holding onto? What needs to go? If Cancer is about family and connection, then who are the people closest to us? Who is in our inner circle? Who are our family or those like family? How do we bond with others?
When we look at the chart of the full moon we see a couple of things. One, the closest aspect the Moon is making is a trine to Neptune in Pisces, a deeply healing influence. If Cancer is the ocean and the mother, then Neptune in Pisces is the cosmic ocean, the source of all things, the divine mother. Neptune washes things away. It grants us compassion, unconditional love, and redemption. If the past and our experiences with our mothers were painful or lacking, call upon Neptune’s healing waters purify and cleanse.
There’s also a surprise in this chart. The full moon falls on the same day as a station of Uranus at 16 Aries. Stations are powerful times of planetary release and Uranus is the great awakener. It upends the status quo. With that in mind, something may be very different about this time of year. If you celebrate the holidays, how are the traditions changing? Is the forgiveness and compassion of Neptune a radical idea? Is it possible to feel love for the person who may have abused or neglected you?
Uranus also stations in aspect to Pluto. We’re feeling a major evolutionary push with the full moon. If we’re contemplating a change, then it’s a change on a fundamental level. Don’t be afraid to push for a breakthrough in the remaining days of 2015. And seeing how Cancer rules home and family, push for a powerful breakthrough with the people closest to you. Neptune and Uranus, two agents of cosmic transformation, say that anything is possible when you open your heart and your mind.
