Welcome to the Taurus New Moon. This is the time in the lunar calendar when our attention turns to the material world. Taurus is the first earth sign; it’s the basic essentials of life — food, shelter, resource, and currency. It’s a sign to create stability and security. The new moon is exact on May 7, 2024 at 18 degrees Taurus, 11:22 pm ET. That’s 8:22 pm Los Angeles, 4:22 am London on May 8, 5:22 am Johannesburg, 8:52 am New Delhi, 1:22 pm Sydney, and 3:22 pm Auckland.
New moons are new beginnings. Taurus invites us to reconnect with our physical lives, to feel the earth beneath our feet. To gather what we need in order to feel safe and secure. It’s also the pleasures and sensualities of life, the flowers and the colors of life that reinvigorate. We set our intentions for new beginnings. We revitalize our relationship to the earth. We examine if and where we feel insecurity or instability, making changes that foster growth.
We’re one month out from an Aries solar eclipse on April 8 and this new moon, while not an eclipse, takes us into a new chapter that began at that time. If Aries is a spark, a flash of something new, then Taurus brings it into shape and form. It’s a lunar month to refind our bearings and take stock of what is important and not important. To take our desires and put them into something real.
Of course, our relationship with matter and the material world is often complicated. A new moon is an opportunity, but it also can put things into focus, especially in the lead up to the full moon. It pushes us to take action. Perhaps not right away, but certainly a week after the new moon with the first-quarter moon.
In the chart of the Taurus New Moon, Venus is in Taurus, a focal point for the coming four weeks. Venus loves Taurus; it’s right at home. It loves flowers and beauty. It loves luxury, too. Set intentions for a renewal of our material lives. But also take practical steps to enjoy the beauty of nature, a decadent meal, and anything that awakens the senses.
What’s curious with this new moon is that it falls alongside Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus, two planets that, together, ignite a seed of reinvention and transformation. There is the potential for rapid growth and dynamic events in the coming days. Even the unexpected. Then again, whatever happens has been part of a larger story line that began in May 2018, March 2019. (Read Uranus in Taurus: Sign by Sign.)
Whatever changes may be a blessing in disguise. A friend or someone in our community may lend a helping hand, a quiet but steady force in a constantly turning world.
