Taurus New Moon

Taurus New Moon: Our Material World

Welcome to the Taurus New Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when we turn our attention to our material lives. As the second sign of the zodiac, Taurus governs over the basics we need in order to live — food, water, shelter — and opens us up to the earthly pleasures. The new moon will be exact on May 16, 2026 at 4:01 pm ET, 25 degrees Taurus. That’s 1:01 pm Los Angeles, 9:01 pm London, 10:01 pm Johannesburg, 1:31 am New Delhi on May 17, 6:01 am Sydney, 8:01 am Auckland.

New moons are new beginnings. They bring renewal, turning the page and opening a chapter that unfolds over the next four weeks. The zodiac sign of the new moon acts as a lens and a focal point for our experiences. Further, the planets that form aspects to the new moon color our experiences, acting as supports or even bringing potential challenges.

Overall, a Taurus New Moon is an invitation to get back to basics, to take steps to create stability and security in our lives, to refresh our relationship with our senses and the earthly pleasures of life. It may be a time when we are thinking about income and our financial needs. Or making notable purchases and investments. Or questioning what is truly of value in our lives in addition to our own self worth and value.

Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus, a planet that we often associate with relationships and love. But Venus also governs over our material world. It is the pentacle, the rose, the five pointed star.

In the chart of the Taurus New Moon, we find Venus over at 27 Gemini, nearing the end of the sign. This means that Gemini is on the receiving end of the Taurus New Moon and its energies of material stability and security. Gemini is a sign that needs to move, explore, and try new things. It has an impulse to buy and accumulate.

So, as a result, there may be a lot of movement on our end in the next four weeks, from spending money on travel to increasing spending or making investments, including investments in our education. Gemini naturally seeks diversity and it may be a time to diversify what we own or even to gather new resources and supplies. We can set intentions for the new moon to be a support for financial lives and to make new decisions.

From a traditional point of view, the new moon takes advantage of a mutual reception between Venus in Gemini and Mercury in Taurus, each occupying one another’s signs. This creates an effect where we receive the benefits of Venus in Taurus and Mercury in Gemini, which gives added strength to the new moon and its material and financial themes.

That said, it’s important to note that this new moon comes three months after the February 17 solar eclipse at 28 Aquarius and three months before the August 12 solar eclipse at 20 Leo. The lunar month that falls between the solar eclipses is often notable in some way, bringing forward the eclipse energy of February and even giving a preview of the eclipse to come in August.

This means that the second half of May and the first half of June could bring important shifts and inflection points, especially for those who are an Aquarius, Leo, Taurus, and Scorpio, and those who have placements in those signs around the degrees of the eclipses. (For example, if the February solar eclipse was in your sign of home and family, the month of May could be the time in which there is a change in a household or a move.)

Then there’s Uranus in Gemini. For me as an astrologer, my lingering question about this new moon is how much, if at all, will Uranus in Gemini be an influence. You could argue, “Not much.” Uranus is at 1 Gemini and the new moon is in Taurus, another sign. But Uranus is a mere five degrees away from the new moon. Mercury is at 28 Taurus, even closer. We will have to see if May-June brings flashes of insights, unexpected new beginnings, disruptions, or a need for reinvention.

Nevertheless, a Taurus lunar month gets to the heart of our material lives. It’s rededication or reexamination of our basic material needs. It’s a push to invest, to build, and create support for the coming months, if not the coming years.
