Welcome to the Cancer Full Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when the spotlight is on home, family, memories, and the past. This is the second Cancer Full Moon of this year, the first, a lunar eclipse, which occurred on January 10, 2020. That said, today’s full moon is exact on December 29, 2020 at 10:28 pm EST, 8 degrees Cancer/Capricorn. That’s 7:28 pm Los Angeles, 3:28 am London on December 30, 5:28 am Johannesburg, 2:28 pm Sydney, and 4:28 pm Auckland.
Full moons put the spotlight on a certain part of our lives. They demand attention. They’re dramatic, energetic, and likely emotional. If the zodiac is the wheel of life, then each successive new and full moon is like a lens for us to view our lives and the world around us. They teach us about the fundamental archetypes of life.
What is Cancer? The Mother. Family. Connection. Home. It’s the safety and security of feeling loved and cared for. It’s the nostalgia for childhood and better times. It’s the softness of life.
Of course, when there’s a full moon in Cancer, it can bring up a lot of complicated emotions, especially if our own mother or our childhood was anything but safe and nurturing. We may be feeling emotional, especially if we are lacking the care and softness that we need. Although home may be where the heart is, it’s often where the hurt is.
That said, this full moon is absent of a lot of the intensities that have marked the Cancer Full Moons of recent memories. It’s thankfully not a lunar eclipse. But it does make a square to Chiron in Aries, which may bring up old scar tissue and pain points, especially anything thats rooted in the past or demands that we have bravery or take action.
What old wounds are you feeling? What knots from the past do you feel tangled in? How can you lovingly tend to them? Unwind them? Bring in the care that you were denied? Or reach out to others to give you the care that you need? (Learn more about Chiron in my clip for Chiron: Healing the Soul webinar.)
Nevertheless, this is a full moon to find a new sense of home and family, to put down roots, and make our own homes the space that we need. With a supportive sextile to Uranus in Taurus, we have an opportunity in this full moon to do things differently and carve out new connections and new family.
Use today’s full moon to meditate on the cosmic mother, the divine mother, the universal mother in its many archetypes. Spend time in water. Take a bath. If you’re near the ocean, sit by the waves. Take a survey of home. Focus on positive memories of the past. Find softness and sweetness.
