Welcome to Cancer Season. The Sun arrived in the fourth sign of the zodiac yesterday, June 21, marking the solstice here in the northern hemisphere as well as an astrological season devoted to home and family, care and nurture, past and memories.
Cancer is a “cardinal” sign, meaning it’s one of the four signs that align with the four directions. If Aries, the first cardinal sign, kicks off the astrological year, then in Cancer we come home. We spend time with loved ones. We refocus on what’s truly of importance, allowing us to shore up the foundation of our lives.
Cancer is also a water sign, one of the four elements as well as the last element in the series. True, water is about emotions and Cancer puts us in touch with primal water and our most fundamental emotional needs, but water also is about movement. Not the movement and travel of air, the element previous, but the movement that brings us to the end of great chapters and prepares us for the next voyage. Water can often initiate us with endings that open the way for new beginnings.
With that in mind, we’re in transition this Cancer Season. Jupiter has been preparing us for this transition, having spent the last twelve months in the sign, but Jupiter will move onto Leo on June 30, and life is about to go in new directions.
Some of our transitions will also bring us backwards when Mercury turns retrograde on June 29 at 26 Cancer. We’ll be retracing our steps and reworking what still needs our attention or closing something that is unfinished. (Mercury will turn direct on July 23, 2026, at 16 Cancer.)
