Scorpio Full Moon: Discomfort

Welcome to the Scorpio Full Moon, the time in the lunar calendar when the spotlight is on the psyche and our deepest self. As a water sign, Scorpio marks transitions and endings, intimacy and vulnerability, emotional bonds and trust, rebirth and transformation. The full moon will be exact on May 1, 2026 at 1:23 pm ET, 11 degrees Scorpio-Taurus. That’s 10:23 am Los Angeles, 6:23 pm London, 7:23 pm Johannesburg, 10:53 pm New Delhi, 3:23 am Sydney on May 2, and 5:23 am Auckland.

Full moons are decision points. The light of the full moon acts like a focus. Emotions may run high. Events may demand that we take action. The seeds planted two weeks before, during the April 17 Aries New Moon, have come to fruition.

The Moon is the great witness. In every moment of our lives it is there, watching. It carries our memories, our history. It marks the passing of time and its eras. It remembers our ancestors and the legacies that we carry.

If each sign acts like a lens for the planets that travel it, then a Scorpio Moon is a witness to our deepest emotions, our pain, and a psychological terrain that remains mostly hidden. After all, the Moon is duality. There is a side that we can see and a side that we cannot see. With a Scorpio Full Moon, what has been hidden can suddenly come to light.

Every year we have a Scorpio Full Moon, so it’s somewhat prosaic compared to more notable astrology of late. But a Scorpio Full Moon can pack an emotional punch. If the Moon by its nature seeks care and comfort, then in Scorpio it travels a sign that can cause discomfort. (Traditionally speaking, the Moon is in its “fall” in Scorpio, opposite Taurus, the sign of its exaltation.)

Evolutionarily speaking, we need this discomfort. It’s how we grow — both in emotional maturity and in spiritual maturity. Through Scorpio the ego — the small “s” self — faces itself so that it can transform, through an alchemical process, into the capital “S” Self that we symbolically see in Sagittarius, the sign that follows Scorpio. (I often joke to clients, if Sagittarius is the sign of wisdom and knowledge, then how does it get its wisdom and knowledge? Through Scorpio.)

So, a Scorpio Full Moon, on one level, is an opportunity for us to do our personal work. For example, if we are navigating a personal or interpersonal emotional challenge, what does that challenge reveal to us on a deeper level? Disguised emotions? Hidden motives? A chance to heal and release?

There’s always a sense of dialogue with Scorpio, even if it’s in confidence or hushed whispers. (Gemini is Scorpio’s 8th House.) As a result, this may be a full moon to have an overdue discussion or an opportunity to be vulnerable with someone, especially an intimate partner.

Let’s not forget that Scorpio is a financial sign, touching on themes around assets and financial planning for the future. And as much as Scorpio can touch on emotional inheritances, it also can speak to what we physically inherit from others.

When we look to the chart of the Scorpio Full Moon, we find Mars, its ruler, at 16 Aries alongside Saturn, Neptune, Mercury, and Chiron. Since Aries is Taurus’s 12 House, this is a full moon of endings, a need to make space for something new. With a square to Jupiter in Cancer, whatever we release — emotional, familial, ancestral — may be a leap of faith, but it is for our highest good. Chiron in Aries, not too far away from Mars, demands healing.

The full moon itself makes a square to Pluto in Aquarius, which brings some force to our experiences over the next few days. In keeping with some of the other placements, Pluto brings finality. We can’t go back to the past. We must move forward.

As mentioned, Jupiter is in Cancer, and it makes a trine to the Moon. Jupiter can smooth over some of Scorpio’s sharper edges, bringing care and even opportunities in the midst of Scorpio’s emotional tumult.

That said, the energies of the full moon are only with us for a few days. Whatever we are feeling will pass. But we should not lose the chance to use its discomfort for our greatest good and our greatest growth.
