Welcome to Scorpio Season. The Sun arrived in the 8th sign of the zodiac late last night, a shift from the airy pleasantries of Libra to the raw truth of Scorpio. It’s a sign that’s driven to investigate, to go within. Scorpio takes us to the symbolic edge of life and death.
Each sign in the zodiac is like a step on a ladder. Aries is the first step. It brings us to the energy of action and forward movement. Each step takes us all the way to Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, a sign of unity, spiritual peace, and transcendence … or a sign where we lose ourselves in our illusions.
When we reach Scorpio in this ladder, we reach a critical step. Do we continue the path of the ego or do we take the opportunity of Scorpio to strip away the illusions in order to go beyond the limitations of the ego? If we do, then our step into Sagittarius, the next rung, can be one that opens us up to wonder, awe, and knowledge.
This is a more esoteric way of looking at the zodiac signs. Then again, the deeper esoteric meaning of the twelve signs is there waiting for us to discover it. For example, Scorpio is the only sign of the zodiac with three animals — the scorpion, the phoenix, the eagle — which represents the deep work that we are confronted with each time we step into the sign.
The scorpion represents the lowest form of the self — reactive, emotional, possessive, close to the material, and ready to strike. The eagle represents the higher self, or the capital S Self. In nature, the eagle is the bird that flies the highest, having transcended the lower s self. Staring into the Sun, it has become one with the light.
In order to become the Eagle, we must be ready to become the Phoenix, ready to surrender ourselves to the fire in order to be reborn as the Eagle.
So, here we are in Scorpio Season. In the coming days, we may notice our dual nature, the parts of us aligned with the Scorpion and the parts of us reaching for the Eagle. Mars is in Scorpio, too, at least until November 4, 2025. We have a real opportunity to take the courage and emotional fortitude of Mars in Scorpio and to reach for the Eagle by stepping into the fires of the Phoenix.
It has to be a choice. But one made with determination.
