In the spirit of Mercury Retrograde, I’m returning to an article idea, Self Care for Empaths, I’ve literally had for years. Not sure why it’s taken me four years to write — probably because there’s a fair bit of confession in this — but no time like the present as they say. This guide is needed is because there is a subset of people called empaths who have emotional and energetic needs that are quite different than the rest. I regularly encounter them in my client work and I can spot them because of their heavy Neptune, Pisces, or 12th House natal energy — sometimes there’s even a strong Scorpio too. Empaths are hypersensitive individuals and often don’t consciously realize just how much energy they process for the collective. They are also highly spiritually connected, a trait that brings with it very specific self care needs.
Are You An Empath?
With the amount of Neptune in my natal chart, I always wondered if I was an empath. Other people define an empath as someone who feels the emotions of others. While this is true, it doesn’t quite capture the fullness of what it means. An empath viscerally feels the emotions of others and find it hard to be in places, like hospitals, where there is emotional distress. Empaths are often healers and caretakers with a desire to help verging on self sacrifice. Their energetic bodies are a conduit for the energy of others, which can bring physical problems if that energy is not transmuted properly. In addition, they frequently experience burn out because their own physical or emotional needs have not been tended to while in service to others.
It took me a while to realize just how much I am an empath. As an adult, I mitigated the effects of hypersensitivity with food and alcohol. It’s hard being an empath, especially when you live in New York, a city of eight million people. In the past there were days when I was so psychically overloaded that the only way I knew to cope was to pour myself a glass of wine at the end of the day or eat something sugary to feel something other than what I was feeling. This would be the lower form of natal Neptune — the desire to numb versus connect to something in its entirety. I would also get exhausted easily or overwhelmed from being in a large crowd of people. Times Square is the last place you’ll ever find me!
Now that I’m older and have done a ton of work on myself, I see a coping mechanism that has outlived its usefulness. Doing the work I do means experiencing energy and emotions in a way that others do not. It can be overwhelming, especially as I still live in (and love) New York City. It also means tending to my emotional, physical, and psychic body in a way that others do not have to. When I have clients who are empaths, I explain to them that there are things they need to do every day to ensure optimal health.
Self Care
Much like you need to brush your teeth every day and other hygienic activities, empaths need to tend daily to their energetic body. This can include:
- Daily energy clearing and grounding. I tell my clients that a good way to create ritual and intention around this is to spend a few minutes in the shower visualizing the water clearing away any accumulated psychic gunk. You can also work with sage, epsom salts, or sea salt baths.
- Creating sacred space. Your home needs to be a sanctuary where the chaos and the din of the outside world cannot cross your threshold. It needs to be a place where you can recharge your batteries, feel safe, and supported.
- Meditating. Getting still and quiet, even if it’s for 10 minutes a day, will help you reconnect to your energetic and psychic body. It will also help you ground through your breath. You can visualize yourself connected to the earth as well as the wisdom of your guides and angels.
- Crystals. Crystals are a great way to help mitigate energetic sensitivity. Black tourmaline, for example, is a powerful protection stone as is Amethyst.
- Detox. Part of having good self care is knowing what is right for you and what is not. If there is a behavior, person, substance, or situation that is overly toxic to your sensitive body, it will let you know in the form of illness and emotional distress. Learn to listen to your intuition. What is it telling you that you need more of and less of?
- Energy and Body Work. Empaths filter, channel, and transmute energy for the collective. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not taking care of yourself. Reiki, acupuncture, and other healing modalities such as massage are all ways to ground and keep your energy body running smoothly.
- Boundaries. When you have a strong Neptune or Pisces in your natal chart, it’s hard to know where you end and someone else begins. You feel everything so strongly. Being an empath means cultivating good boundaries and learning to say no.
- Animals. Pets are more than just our companions. They also help to transmute energy and help keep our heart chakra open.
- Nature. The earth, trees, and ocean are all invaluable tools to help us ground and transmute energy. If you can, spend time in the sanctuary of the natural world. Don’t forget to thank the elements for their service and support.
These are merely a few places to start with your own self care regimen. As always, trust your own intuition. If you feel like you’re energetically sensitive, what is your body telling you? Are you numbing out? As we move further into the energetic intensity of the times we live in, this is the perfect time to start making positive, healthy changes — especially if you’re an empath.
I love this heartfelt post and what good advice. I completely agree about the Pisces/Neptune connection, and it does seem to me that I also get an unusually large proportion of clients with these signatures. I would add that Cancer, especially Cancer Moon can also be an emotional sponge. Learning how to stay safe is such an important life skill and it can take years to figure out. Thanks for this.
Do you think that sufferers of chronic fatigue syndrome may in fact be empaths who are unaware of what they must do to protect and clear themselves? I’m a longtime astrological practitioner and while I often say all these things to Pisces clients especially — it never struck me before that this could have clinical implications. Thanks for the article.
Thank you. With Sun conjunct Neptune in 12th house Scorpio and Moon in Pisces it all makes sense now. How I feel overwhelmed with emotion when mass events occur. A life history of super charged emotional states at times not proportionate to my personal situation. Over the years I have instinctually developed many of the self-care protocols you list and after having cancer last year have totally realigned my lifestyle. Your article has helped me understand and not be so harsh on myself. Thanks again.
Jeanne, possibly. While I haven’t looked at the charts of people who have chronic fatigue, it always struck me as a bit Neptunian — like Neptune in the 6th or something, which has a tendency to pop up with people who have ailments that defy diagnosis. I often feel there is an energetic root to the malady.
Thank you for this article. It is 10 days before my birthday….Pisces. I have long known that I am an Empath. It has at times been almost unbareable even to walk down the street. It has made some of my friendships so very intense for me yet also needing to withhold that intensity so as not to scare away valued friendships. Feeling people’s pain both emotional and physical. I am also a shaman and feel compelled to go where I am called. To heal psychically even against resistance on this plane. The resistance is most exhausting. Balancing the many planes of existence given the the empathic senses on each this too is exhausting. I am often ‘super competent’ yet other times barely able to address simple earthly chores.
Thank you for reminding me that there are more of us out there. would like to talk to you about next moves.
Thank you 🙂
I did not know anything abt the sign of stars. I just started to read about fire horses and the year of of the horse fortune. I started to aware of all these things.. i always know i am sensitive. I hate crowded places too. Pass 2 weeks, i have been feeling under the weather. I can feel all their negativites and they totally draine me ..I never knew there are people like empath exist. Thank you for the info.
I have Neptune in Scorpio, 12th house..Venus in Pisces 4th house, Scorpio rising and North Node Scorpio…I’m and Aries/Taurus Cusp so I’ve learned to be a hard ass to try not to feel other stuff. Avoidance at all costs cuz it all hurts way too much. I’m finally learning to protect myself and to remember to do it! lol, there’s ADD going on there too! Grounding is huge for me, it something I have difficulty with cuz I just plain don’t want to do it. I have very little earth in my natal chart. I am 1 degree into taurus. I am no spring chicken and it’s taken a long time to learn some of this. I’m glad there are articles like this around that can assist people who are confused by it all. It can be overwhelming to say the least. A therapist once said to me, “You’re very intense!” I said, “Yeah, no shit!” When you feel things as intensely as I do, it tends to make you that way! It’s been an interesting ride to say the least!
Thanks! This is a helpful reminder!
But what would an example of a strong Neptune or Pisces be? Just curious. I probably have one!
I do not fit the astrological signs but feel the intensity of many situations and the elements around me. I have too much love and commitment to share with others with intense energy. I have to learn to FOCUS and ZEN myself with yoga and prayer. I have experienced many incredible senses that guide me throughout the day. I believe I am too deep in my psychic on a daily bases so I try to find balance in nature. Living a healthy structured life with boundaries is very helpful but finding FRIENDS that complement your goodness goes a long way. I thank GOD everyday for his blessings and strive to remain graceful and sensitive to others. Empaths can be a lonely existence so I try to just be myself…HONEST and TRUE…
Anna, a strong Neptune or Pisces would be Sun or Moon in Pisces, Sun or Moon in aspect to Neptune, Sun or Moon in the 12th, stellium of planets in the 12th. An empath I know, for example, has a stellium of planets in the 12th in Scorpio with a Scorpio Ascendant. Another has a stellium of planets, including her Sun, in Pisces trine Neptune in the 1st. I have Mercury/Mars/Neptune conjunct in the 12th on the Ascendant and a Pisces South Node plus a Scorpio Sun.
I have Neptune in my 12th just a few degrees above my Ascendant. It’s also part of a “kite” in my chart – trine my 8th house Sun, trine my Moon (on my IC), and sextile Pluto (on my MC).
I’ve always felt painfully sensitive to the world but only recently started to identify with being an empath – which has made everything make so much more sense. What a relief! It’s also allowed me to (give myself permission to) change my life in ways that foreground my emotional and energetic needs.
Thank you for this article and these great tips. It’s a wonderful reminder!
I love reading your work ..always so well timed too. Being Pisces sun with neptune in the 12 house ..I relate to this so much . After years of emotional burn out / finding ways to numb the pain via addictions etc..finally starting to find ways to balance my nervous system and actually use my skills for better use . Being an empath came in handy when I was in art school , I was able to merge completely with my still life subject and drop into a timeless place “the zone” ,come out a few hours later with a masterpiece . My art teacher always wanted to know how I managed to capture the mood of light and colour ..and that was how i did it . By merging ..did the same when working as a massage therapist ..went into the zone and merged with clients feeling their pains and releasing it …the only problem is the burn out . Such a fine line to walk . I find sleeping a lot and being in water the only way to heal . Interesting as well I find being in Asia really suits my Neptune challenges. I can move slower , with more ,grace and subtility in communication . I find most asian cultures work on more subtle energetic levels of communication and it feels so natural and easy to me .
I just stumbled upon this and am very grateful for it. Real practical suggestions for empaths are few and far between. I’m wondering where it shows in my chart though. I have nothing in the 12th house, and nothing in Pisces. I have Neptune in Scorpio in the tenth house but it makes no major aspects. I do, however, have a five planet stellium in the eighth house.
Thank you, Nancy. I think your 8th House stellium definitely counts!
I always read about empaths. I am a 24 year old girl and i feel that the definition is exactly who i am in terms of personality.
The problem is that as a possible empath, i am very outgoing and i tend to get angry when overwhelmed. I am known for always telling the truth, even though I can sometimes lack tact on how to say it. It ends up coming out a bit aggressive, and overly blunt. In my head I always think its better to speak the truth even if it hurts, than like and act fake for the sake of protecting other people’s egos. I see, however, that this honestly has cost me some friendships, and some fights with my family. I don’t know If I could maybe talk to you Katie, since I feel that no shrink, no friend, no family and no parent ever truly gets what I feel, who I am and why I am the way I am. Let me know.
hi katie, I really love and appreciate your work : well done! as for empaths, personally I found a crystal called “herkimer diamond” incredibly more powerful in terms of protection and maintainance of inner peace than black tourmaline (mine used to break in my pockets), also in cases of electro-magnetical pollution. the strongest means, however, and the definitive solution for me was a psychic defence technique I learned (don’t know if I’m allowed to quote where, if so please let me know and I will). as a fellow astrologer, I confirm your hint that planets in scorpio are often the triggers, regardless of their being well or badly aspected and of where they are placed. particularly, I find that the whole neptune-in-scorpio generation has this kind of sensitivity, which often becomes a problem if not understood / channeled / redirected. also, some of my clients with virgo rising (= pisces 7th house) state that they just cannot be around people that are negative, or plain stressed out, and that they need to shield themselves. if you want to contact me for an exchange of views please let me know. keep up the good work :). isabella.
Wow, this is a great article! I’m an health coach for empathic women and you’re right on. Self-care is the MOST important thing you can do for yourself! As an empath, I use crystals in my healing but have started recommending crystal therapy techniques for my women too. For me, malachite has worked really well ( I clean it often). Thanks for a great perspective and wonderful article! I’m glad this information is available!
Great article. I have Neptune conjunct moon in Capricorn, trine my Virgo sun, and I’m definitely an empath…I pick up on others’ energies like a sponge. It can be stressful and overwhelming. I will definitely follow these techniques. Sometimes if needed I envision a sort of bubble around me, and picture other people’s energies bounce off me so that I can only feel my own. That seems to work too!
I have been told by a numerologist and several astrologers that my charts show I have psychic abilities- is this the same as being and empath?
Please respond- thanks 🙂
Empathy and psychic abilities are different. But they often go hand in hand.
This is rare for Scorpios? I’m a Scorpio and I feel this, strongly. I hate it.
I see myself in most of your illustrations. I’m a novice as far as the technicalities go. I was born on the 12th of October in 1982, makes me a Libra. Am I an empath?
Please, I wait on your response.
Eye-opening article, really nice; nice job at simplifying.
Omg! Thank you for making sense of all this for me and the rest of us who’s on the verge of losing it.
Tripod chart
Gemini/Scorpio rising
Solar eclipse
12H Scorpio
Pluto, Saturn, mars
2H Capricorn
Uranus, Neptune, Jupiter
7H stellium Gemini
Sun, n.node, Venus, Chiron, moon, mercury

And throw in an awakening back in March! I’m a hot mess…. Lol! At least I’m not alone.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This helped make sense of a lot of things.
Hi! I enjoyed your article very much! I think I am an empath since I have been on edge most of my life in every kind of situation. My most calm years were spent with a Taurus probably becaus he was a very grounded individua; After we broke up I tried to find the reasons I couldn’t be stabilised without him. I learned that I am a Scorpio with an Aquarius rising and a moon in Pisces. Would you say this could characterise an empath? I have a very hard time grounding and feel the need for physical touch very much as it is the only thing that can calm me and make me feel safe.
Great article, currently really striving to work on my self-care. I’m excited to read your other articles.
12H – sun and mercury in Aquarius
1H – Venus and Ascendant in Pisces (Jupiter in Aries is also in 1H)
Neptune in 11th in Capricorn
Thankyou sometimes this journey is so raw. I feel so much I also live a life of a hermit and surround myself in nature instead. Every pain and energy feels my own and seems as time goes on it only grows more intense. Thankyou for allowing my mind to rest even for a minute to know that I’m not alone
I don’t know what to say. Alone. burdened. Confused. Crazy? Overwhelmed. Mentally abused for over 2 years by my narcissistic social-pathic lover. A Scorpio who still finds ways to torment me. A twin in my mother’s womb. A Gemini. With the spirit of the wolf.
