Happy new year! Phew, what a year 2016 was. Up was down and down was up. If we learned anything from the astrology it’s that even though Uranus and Pluto finished their epic squares between each other, we’re still feeling the aftershocks.

Here’s the thing to keep in mind about this era of time we’re navigating. It’s about everything completely changing. I know, crazy. But astrology is the art of telling symbolic time and we’ve been in these intense configurations between the outer planets. So as you embark on a new year — some of you feeling as though you barely made it — what radical thing do you want to create? How do you want to be part of the solution instead of the problem? The game changed long ago. Some of us are still trying to play the old game. Make sure you’re playing the new game. Or creating your own game.

Capricorn season is a reminder of just how much things have changed. As the Sun lines up with Pluto on January 7 and Uranus on January 10, we’re again taking a hard look at what needs to further change. And, seriously, that full moon on January 12 with a cardinal grand cross packed into it isn’t something to ignore. Things are really shifting in January. Cardinal grand crosses initiate us into a new season, one that is some times quite different from the one before.

We’re also wrapping up a Mercury Retrograde on January 8. Mark your calendars, but double check everything until then.

Aries

Aries Glyph

Not sure if you’re coming or going, Aries? On one hand, Capricorn season is the time of year when career is in the spotlight. You’re naturally pushing out into the world and starting a new chapter focused on professional achievement and taking your life to the next level. In fact, a bolt of Uranus’s unpredictable energy just before the start of the new year is ensuring that you’re starting off 2017 in brand new territory. But then there’s Mars in Pisces. Don’t forget, Mars is your ruling planet. And when it’s in a sign like Pisces, like it is for most of January, you’re feeling these changes and initiatives in your career against the backdrop of endings, retreat, and diminished vigor. As a result, things won’t seem so straightforward this month. You’re having to tie up a lot of loose ends and surrender to the fact that there’s a lot out of your hands. I think this pull towards Pisces this month is a reminder that whatever you’re creating this month, whatever next step you’re taking in the world, it has to be aligned with something deeper. Pisces demands compassion, empathy, spiritual values, and an understanding that everything, from the smallest particle to something as vast as the galaxy, is connected. It’s not enough to want something for yourself this month, Aries. You need Spirit to give it the seal of approval, too. On January 1, Mars and mystical Neptune will join up, helping you to intuit or even channel what the next chapter in your life is about. Make sure you make a note of any feelings, messages, or dreams. Make sure you get lots of rest, too, because the full moon on January 12 will put the spotlight on home, family, and your living situation — full moon energies that will demand some major change or shift in how you see something in your emotional core. There may be a need to separate as well, drawing the line between one part of your life and another. Then, on January 19, you’ll have a check in with Saturn, the planet who’s been pushing you to get serious about what you believe in and how you see the world. Where do you need to get real? Saturn has a habit of putting this into black and white. Finally, on January 28, Mars will say goodbye to Pisces and arrive in Aries. Having Mars in your sign is like a jolt of energy, a push to take action, and begin again. After feeling so low on energy or caught behind the scenes, it will be a welcome change to have Mars on your side. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Taurus

Taurus Glyph

Got your bags packed? Going on a trip? Capricorn season is travel time for you, Taurus. With the Sun shining a light on both short and long distance journeys in January, you could find yourself planning for a vacation or getting on a plane for foreign shores. Capricorn is also one of your educations signs, so this is the natural time of year for you to focus on the specialized training, university classes, or programs you need to take your career and ambitions to the next level. Note that money may be playing a factor in the astrology mix as Capricorn points towards a big lessons you’ve been learning about finance, debt, and getting your bank account in order. Do you have the funds you need to take a trip right now? Or book that class or workshop? If taking your money game to the next level can be one of your new year’s resolutions, you’ll be doing Capricorn and it’s ruling planet Saturn proud in 2017. In other news, with your ruling planet, Venus, moving into Pisces on January 3, you’ll be spending most of the month feeling extra sensitive, intuitive. Since Pisces is known for its compassion and service, it will be a great month to reach out to the less fortunate, work with a humanitarian organization, or volunteer for a charitable cause. It will be important to be around the people that really understand you, who share your values, and you connect with on a spiritual level. Mars has been stirring up this part of your chart, too — a planet that is far less diplomatic than Venus. If you have a disagreement with a friend or in your social circle, how can you release, forgive, and let go? Even if it’s a really old disagreement? Looking ahead towards a shaky full moon on January 12, you will have a decision to make that centers on travel, classes, or communication — one with sudden consequences. The full moon may also bring unexpected information. Then, on January 19, Mars and Saturn square off, two planets that play a big role in your chart. Think back to August 24. Did you make a commitment on or around that date? Start something new? Take a new turn in a relationship or in your career? January 19 will be a link to events in late August. Speaking of career, the new moon on January 27 will set you up for a new beginning or initiative in your professional life. If you want to start 2017 off on the right foot, where does your career fit in? Use the new moon and the days after to create a clear plan for what you want in the world and how you to get recognized for it. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Gemini

Gemini Glyph

The new year opens up with you in retrograde. (It’s okay, Gemini. It happens.) In fact, you’re tying up loose ends in your relationships and other interpersonal connections, especially anything that takes you back to early December. What needs another look? A do over? When Mercury, your ruling planet, turns direct on January 8, you’re back in business, not before having to close one chapter and prepare for the next. (Don’t forget, you’ve been doing major work in all your relationships over the last year courtesy of Saturn. This will continue to be a major focus in 2017.) Another thing to keep in mind is that Capricorn season is a time in your personal calendar when you have to look into your psyche. What makes you uncomfortable? What are your fears? How do you feel about intimacy, trust, sexuality? As you dig deep in January, a deeper sense of self awareness and emotional connection will set you up for a healthier 2017, body, mind, and soul. Another area of focus this month will be money and financial stability. And, as new year’s resolutions go, it’s not a bad idea to use January’s astrology to make some major changes in what you value and what you need to feel safe and secure, especially around the full moon on January 12. In other news, Mars in Pisces will heat up career for most of January — as much as Mars can actually “heat up” Pisces, your career sign. As you may or may not know, Pisces is intuition, compassion, service, and trying to make the world a better place. So Mars will push you out in the world to achieve success and get recognition … albeit in more altruistic ways. Additionally, Mars and Saturn will square off on January 19. Whatever relationship changes, milestones, and efforts you’ve been working on, especially since last August, will get a big check in with Saturn. Your commitments and responsibilities will need a review as well, too. You’re under a lot of pressure, Gemini. Then again, you know this. You’ve been having to get your act together since 2015. This month will be a great time to check in on all you’ve achieved, let go, and restructured. By the end of December, with the Sun moving into your travel sign, you’ll be getting restless and wanting to take off on a trip. But, first, do your Saturn due diligence and get finances in order first. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Key Themes: Money, income, finance, salary, material security, wealth, shared resources, assets, debt, estate, taxes, benefits, purchases, career, commitments, responsibilities, work, reputation, status, ambition, achievement, relationships, partnership, interpersonal connection, travel, education, beliefs, faith, world view.

Cancer

Cancer Glyph

Let’s talk big picture, Cancer, because this is a big picture month. I don’t have to tell you that the past few years have probably been some of the most difficult of your life. You’ve been caught between forces much greater than you, each pulling in different directions. As a water sign, emotions and emotional security are integral to who you are. But what happens when you’re faced with experiences that shake your core, experiences that rattle your sense of stability? It’s hard to know where home is these days. Or maybe home is in a very different place than it was a few years ago. As you arrive in 2017, this great tide is still pulling in and out of the four corners of your life. When the Sun is in Capricorn, as it is for most of January, the spotlight is on relationships — not just your intimate partnerships, but all your interpersonal relationships. This month will be a reminder that connection is an area you’ve been doing a lot of work on courtesy of Pluto in Capricorn. You’ve manifested people in your life who have greatly challenged and pushed you or were a force of unprecedented evolution in your life. Are these people still around? Are they toxic? Are they holding a mirror to things you’d rather not see? Are you learning to stand up for yourself? Are you ready to become a better version of you? Keep these questions in mind as the Sun and Pluto line up on January 7. The Cancer Full Moon on January 12 will put you in the spotlight and will be another push to make a break or take your life in a different direction. The other area getting play this month is career. You made some big moves with work around August 24, when Mars and Saturn aligned. January will be go time for anything you began then. Do you have enough education to put your ambitions into reality? Do you need to get more organized? Travel to faraway places to get the training or knowledge you need? The Mars/Saturn square on January 19 will put it to the test. But any initiatives you take with your career or your life’s direction may need to wait till Mars gets to Aries on January 28. By then you’ll be starting a month long race to the top. Start sketching out your agenda as well as your ambitions for 2017. Don’t be afraid to make yet another big move. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Leo

Leo Glyph

Capricorn season clocks in just in time for all the things you’re supposed to do at the start of the year — get healthy, get organized, get serious. Sort of a buzz kill for a Leo, a sign that’s a little more inclined to enjoy the good life, but it’s not a bad idea to start 2017 off on the right foot. So, where to begin? Well, the Sun, your ruling planet, will make a couple of jumpy aspects to Pluto and Uranus from January 7–10. Translation? If you need to make a bold move in how you take care of yourself, how you treat your body, and structure your daily life, then these aspects will give you a powerful opportunity to do so. In fact, the full moon on January 12 will help you shed persistent habits and leave the old behind. But make no mistake, this is a powerful full moon and it’s pointing at the part of your chart that speaks to endings. If a chapter is closing, what new chapter do you want to begin? And, as a Leo, how will you create the next story of your life? Another thing to keep an eye on is Mars. It’s been poking around your deepest fears and anxieties since December 19. In short, you’ve been doing some soul searching and will continue to do so into January. As much as you’re getting your physical health in order this month, it’s a good idea to get your emotional and mental health in order as well. A square off between Mars and Saturn on January 19 will be a check in on this process as well as any big initiatives you began with the Mars/Saturn conjunction last August 24. Then, on January 28, Mars will change signs, pointing the way toward foreign travel, long distance journeys, and education. You may end the month planning for a big trip or feeling very far away from home. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Key Themes: Health, wellness, diet, fitness, nutrition, routine, schedule, daily life, organization, order, service, work, colleagues, projects, habits, endings, going within, retreat, facing fears, the psyche, spirituality, the unconscious, dreams, recuperation, rehab, finance, assets, banking, benefits, debt, taxes, estate, foreign travel, long distance journeys, religion, philosophy, beliefs, faith, higher education.

Virgo

Virgo Glyph

What does it mean to be you? What are your likes? Your personality? How can you be your own worst enemy at times? As a Virgo, you like to be the boss of things, you like to be in control. But there’s been a bigger story in your astrology about learning to let go. As your ruling planet, Mercury, finishes up its retrograde on January 8, you’re learning to be more self aware — especially of the aspects of you that are less than helpful. Don’t think of this as something bad. In fact the planets are helping you evolve and map out a plan for the new year. Yes, Virgo is great with the details, but Capricorn season is about learning to shine and get recognized for your (often unsung) talents. So that means being less self critical, learning to let go, and be seen for who you really are. The full moon on January 12 will put the spotlight on friendships, your social network, and your community. That said, full moons can be confrontational and with the line up of Jupiter, Uranus, and Pluto in the mix, you may be digging through themes of trust, value, stability, and security. Whoever you call a friend, whatever groups you associate with, they need to feed your heart and nurture your soul. If not, you may need to make some changes. Another area getting a lot of focus this month is relationships. With Mars in Pisces for most of January, you may be on the offensive with people, especially your close one-on-one connections. Mars isn’t exactly a peaceful influence, so your interactions with others may be charged, especially when Mars and Saturn square off on January 19, touching on themes of emotional commitment and the needs of others. Mars will change signs on January 28, putting the heat on intimacy, trust, fears, and anxieties. Couple that with with a series of bumpy aspects between Mercury, Pluto, and Uranus on January 29-31 and something will have to change in how you open up to others, express your true feelings. Don’t be afraid to face your fears. It’s the only way to move forward. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Key Themes: Personality, ego, self expression, talent, creativity, self sabotage, self destruction, rebirth, breakthrough, transformation, friends, community, social networks, groups, the future, humanity, the collective, social causes, relationships, partnerships, interpersonal connection, intimacy, trust, the psyche, fears, anxieties, power, control, money, stability, security, foundation, roots, family, home.

Libra

Libra Glyph

Let’s get back to basics, Libra. Now that it’s Capricorn season, it’s the time in your personal calendar to pull back from the world and reconnect with those closest to you — from your family to your inner circle. In fact, Capricorn is the sign that forms the foundation of your chart. As a result, the Sun will shine a light on emotional connection and security for most of January. It’s also a time for you to spend time or making changes in the home, a place that’s experienced some ups and downs the past few years. If you look at the bigger picture, Libra, you’re in a larger chapter of your life where the whole concept of home, family, roots, and connection have been getting a radical overhaul. You’ve had to look at some difficult things, from family dynamics and emotional legacies, as well as possibly even uprooting yourself. As you approach the annual line up between the Sun and Pluto on January 7, you’ll have a check in with this process of emotional purging you’ve been doing. (Definitely in the spirit of new year’s resolutions, no?) And if getting healthy and being an all around better “you” is on the agenda for 2017, Venus’s arrival in the work and health part of your chart on January 3 will help you start the new year off on the right foot. Mars has already been heating up this area, pushing you to get organized, get disciplined, and maybe even make changes in your diet. Speaking of work, a powerful full moon on January 12 will turn a spotlight on your career and public reputation. If you’ve been wanting to take the next step in your professional life, such as changing jobs, getting a new job, or getting recognized, put in the extra work around the full moon. But note that the energy of the full moon is seeded with energy that speaks to leaving the past behind, making a break, and facing your fears. By the end of the month, with the Sun arriving in Aquarius on January 19 and Mars arriving in Aries on January 28, the narrative will start to move toward romance and relationships, something that will be a major focus as you move into February. If anything, Mars in Aries, your relationship sign, will be less than boring. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Scorpio

Scorpio Glyph

Normally Mars hanging out in your chart’s sector of fun, pleasure, and romance would be cause for celebration. (Hey, not a bad way to start the new year, right?) But as much as you’d like to play around with Mars, you may be doing some soul searching this January. As in, taking a look at past romances, lovers, and flings. (Scorpio has been known to leave a trail of romantic destruction in its wake.) Even if you’re in a long term relationship, you may be thinking about how to release old knots around pleasure, getting what you want, and being recognized for who you are. Just something to keep in mind as Mars moves its way through Pisces this month, your sign of romance as well as creativity, talent, and self expression. And you’ll have a major check in with this area of your life when Mars joins up with Chiron on January 16 followed by a square off to Saturn on January 19. The energy may be heavy around those days as a result. That said, Capricorn season is the time in your personal calendar when you turn your attention to communication, learning, and travel. In fact this is an area that has been getting a major overhaul the last few years. As a Scorpio, you’re already hooked up to a lot of power, but you’ve had to take a serious look at how you use your voice. When the Sun and Pluto join up on January 7, you’ll have to face your shadow — any negative thoughts, words, anything in the unconscious. But on the other end of things, you’re learning to reclaim your voice, especially the value behind what you have to say. In other news, travel will be a focus in January. You maybe running around town or planning a big trip, especially around the full moon on January 12. Keep an eye on the end of January. When Mars goes into Aries on January 28, you’ll be in work mode. Make a list of your resolutions now so that at the end of January you can boldly move forward into the new year and start fresh. Sagittarius

Sagittarius Glyph

It hasn’t been easy being a Sag lately. Normally free spirited and a bit of a wanderer, you’ve had Saturn, the planet of maturity, bearing down on you for the last year or so. It’s been time to grow up, make some hard decisions, and take on a role of leadership. Yes, it’s been a lot of work, but as you peer out into 2017 and the last leg of this Saturn chapter, chances are you’re starting off on a solid foundation. (If not, time to make some serious resolutions for the new year and stick to them. Saturn will only come down on you harder if you aren’t. #realtalk) Then there’s Jupiter. Your ruling planet has been caught between Pluto and Uranus since last month, which means you’ve been feeling a major squeeze. Pluto and Uranus are two planets that demand nothing less than total transformation. As a result, some of your “stuff” has been coming up. You know, your shadows, your nagging karmic baggage. This squeeze will continue into January. But really keep in mind that this isn’t a negative influence. Yes, it’s game time. Yes, you’re tired and could really use a long tropical vacation and a nice drink. But this is your moment, especially as you start the new year, to really make a push to be a better you. In fact, the full moon on January 12 will really drive home this need for change. In other news, Mercury will be retrograde until January 8, shaking out old loves, old relationships, and any stubborn issues around value. Speaking of love, Mars will ignite your chart’s sector of romance and fun starting January 28, which could make for a passionate February. Just keep in mind that Mercury, your relationship planet, will do a round with Pluto and Uranus at the end of January, forcing you to make some big changes in how you connect and relate to others, from your one-on-one relationships to intimate partnerships. Capricorn

Capricorn Glyph

Happy birthday, Capricorn! You could use a hug, right? Life’s been a bit much, I know. With Saturn, your ruling planet, still camped out in Sagittarius for the rest of the year, you’re still doing deep, behind the scenes meditation, reflection, and recuperation. You’re still trying to figure out the meaning of life and trying not to lose faith in the process. And Saturn’s been in a long square with Chiron, which means that this month you’re still digging into painful psychic scars, meditating on loss, and that crushing feeling if you’re all alone in the world. I know, maybe not the happiest of places to be, but we needed to get some real talk out of the way. Here’s what you need to remember, Capricorn, especially as you blow out the candles in celebration of another year. You’re a builder. You’re the last of the earth signs. Aquarius

Aquarius GlyphIt’s a new year, Aquarius! As one of the most forward looking, visionary signs of the zodiac, let’s look at where you’re at as you step into 2017. The big thing to take consciousness of is that you’re in the last leg of Saturn in Sagittarius. After all, Saturn is your ruling planet and it spends about two and a half years in each sign. So you’ve been in this longer chapter of your life, since 2015, of working on forging community and social connection as well as working on deeper themes of belonging. In fact, with Saturn in a long square with Chiron this month, you may be feeling old psychic or emotional scars around friendship and loss, scars that touch on self worth and value. But with Uranus supporting you all January, this is your month to make a break from the old, to think outside of the box, and make major innovation in your life — not exactly a hard thing for an Aquarius to do. Another thing to keep in mind is that this is the time in your personal calendar, as you prepare for your next birthday, to pull back from the world, to rest, reflect, and shed old layers. What do you want to let go of in the new year? What habits? Addictions? A powerful full moon on January 12 will put the spotlight on health, wellness, diet, nutrition, and work — all those things you’re supposed to look at as you start the new year. With that in mind, if you need to make a change in your diet or change something about your daily life in a deeply transformative and lasting way, this will be your full moon. We all talk about eating right, making a job change, cleaning things out, but the planets will really be pushing you to stick to it. Additionally, a square off between Mars and Saturn on January 19 will demand a career commitment or put the pressure on with a responsibility. By the end of the month, a new moon in Aquarius on January 27 will set you on a new year filled with personal breakthrough. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Pisces

Pisces Glyph

Are you all fired up? Do you feel restless? With Mars in Pisces for most of January, you’re getting a boost that only happens every two years — a boost that will help you take initiative and start fresh. But here’s the thing. As a Pisces you know you’re a bit of a sensitive, intuitive sign. Even with bold, brash Mars on your side, you still need to align it with the energy of Spirit, which is to say use Mars to actively help people and share your faith and wisdom with others. That said, we’re in Capricorn season, a time in your personal calendar when the Sun highlights your community, your friendships, and social connections. This is an area you’ve been doing a lot of major growth and transformation over the last few years. Maybe you’ve seen friends come and go or your connection to community radically change. As a sign that is deeply attuned to the needs of others, the full moon on January 12 will be a reminded to make sure your own needs are taken care of. If you’ve been getting lost in the crowd, how do you showcase your talents, your creativity, and your gifts? Another thing to keep in mind is that Jupiter, your ruling planet, has been caught in a tense t-square between Pluto and Uranus since December. If Mars is making you feel restless and perhaps a little jumpy, how do you use this drive to make a major change? A breakthrough? It will mean having to face your fears, your shadow, the places in which you self sabotage. And if you’ve been struggling with personal blocks in your career, use this energy to push through them this month. That’s the only way you’re going to get to the next level. And thankfully you have Mars in Pisces giving you a shot of courage. In fact, a square off between Mars and Saturn on January 19 will be a big check in on your career and how you are handling responsibility. By the end of January you’ll be starting to wind down as the Sun moves into the last stretch of your personal calendar. Relax and rest up.
