Yesterday I briefly touched on the upcoming lunar eclipse and its activation of Chiron in Pisces. As a newer addition to astrology — Chiron was only discovered in 1977 — its a powerful, if subtle, influence that astrologers are only now starting to incorporate into their work. But I think Chiron is often misunderstood, and the awkward label often slapped onto it, the “wounded healer”, does little to really transmit the archetype that it represents.

So, how do we interpret Chiron? What does it reveal to us?

Chiron belongs to a different class of heavenly bodies. It’s not a planet. It’s not even really an asteroid. When placed in the chart it describes a point of contention, a raw nerve that we are either conscious or unconscious of. It’s a pain, a suffering. And when Chiron is in Pisces, as it’s been since roughly 2011, our collective pain and suffering is Piscean in nature — existential, spiritual, emotional. Our soul aches yet we don’t know how to ameliorate it. Maybe we’re drinking more. Maybe we feel more lost than ever. Or maybe we’re deep in the wormhole looking for answers.

Tomorrow Mars and the Sun will make what are called hard aspects to Chiron — just a day before the eclipse. I think the real choice we have to make with Pisces is whether we’re connecting or separating. The glyph of Pisces represents the two fishes of the constellation swimming in different directions. It’s also a metaphor for the pole of Spirit and Matter. In our journey around the zodiac, Pisces is the last stop. It takes the choices of Gemini, translated through the consciousness of Aquarius, and returns it for one or the other — Spirit or Matter.

So as our knots of pain and longing are activated this week, we have to be in consciousness of our choices, our lives. Even though there are many in astrology who describe Chiron as the wound that never heals, I belive that some wounds do heal. The knot gets looser, the pain transmutes. Whatever suffering you’re feeling this week, offer it up to the collective, offer it to Spirit for transmutation so that there is less contraction and density in the fabric of humanity.

This is our Chiron work. Our pain is not our pain. It’s the pain of the collective that we’re incarnating on an individual level. The eclipse on Friday, September 16 will give us an opportunity to release it.
