Welcome to the Libra New Moon. Welcome to the equinox. It’s the time in the zodiac calendar to connect with others, to forge relationship and partnership, to learn to negotiate and compromise, to cultivate beauty and harmony. The new moon is exact on September 25 at 5:55 pm ET, 2 degrees Libra. That’s 2:55 pm Los Angeles, 10:55 pm London, 11:55 pm Johannesburg, 7:55 am Sydney on September 26, and 9:55 am Auckland.
New moons are new beginnings, a time to turn the page and focus on a new chapter. Over the next four weeks, we’re experiencing life through the lens of Libra, one of the four cardinal signs and a sign that aligns with the start of a new season — autumn here in the northern hemisphere, spring in the southern. The four cardinal signs are also the four pillars of life. Without them life would collapse.
As a cardinal sign, Libra plays a crucial role. It’s one of the four directions. It holds up and supports the sky. It says that relationship and socialization is critical to life. In 2020, primarily confined alone to my apartment in a shut down city, I learned this lesson all too well. And, as a result, it made me appreciate relationship in all its many forms, from the casual connection with a neighborhood barista to the importance of friends, neighbors, and family.
We don’t need a crisis to make us aware of the importance of connection. Libra Season by design is a time to revisit an archetype that builds upon Gemini, the sign of duality and pairing, and forge bonds and connection. Like Gemini, Libra is an air sign and air needs to move and breathe. We need to move and breathe.
This is a new moon to recommit yourself to others, to plant seeds for new connection and partnership, to tend to existing relationship, and find compromise if there is conflict.
Venus, the ruler of the new moon, is still in Virgo, a sign that speaks more to endings than beginnings. As a result, we’re straddling the new and the old. We’re revisiting the past in order to move forward. After all, Mercury is retrograde at the time of the new moon.
Venus in Virgo also highlights themes around service to others as well as the emotional work that is needed to make relationships thrive. With an opposition to Neptune, the next four weeks will ask us to forgive, release, let go of the ego, and find compassion for others, especially if there is an existing conflict.
That the thing about Neptune, especially when Neptune is a major note in the astrology, is that it’s not about what we want. Neptune reminds us of the things that are larger than us. It’s not just connection, but a soul connection. It’s relationship on a higher octave and sometimes the messy human stuff that gets in the way.
