As we start the week, Mars returns to Cancer, a retrograde review of a sign it was in from September to November. It’s an element shift, too, from fire to water, an element about the past, memories, home, family. We’re motivated to create emotional connection.
The Moon’s also in Aries, the sign that Mars rules. As a result, we’re feeling the push to move forward and take action. And yet we’re having to review something from the past, especially anything around interpersonal connections and relationships.
Mars in Cancer typically has a strong desire to protect, to create a sense of kinship, to forge relationships. But it can run emotionally hot … from passionate to testy. With an Aries Moon, just a heads up that things may feel a little agitated.
Let’s not forget that Mars is still opposite Pluto in Aquarius. While Mars may be out of sign, we’re still feeling reverberations from last week’s powerful opposition on January 3. As a result, we may be navigating a strong push to make a change, to reform or transform, or feeling the push and pull of power dynamics. (Read: Pluto in Aquarius: Sign by Sign.)
This week we have one of 2025’s notable astrological events. The Lunar Nodes change signs on January 11, moving into Pisces-Virgo for the next 18 months. If the Nodes are like a directional arc in the sky, bringing larger themes into our personal and collective experience, Pisces-Virgo means that healing, service, compassion will be a major lens in 2025 and into 2026.
