This is Saturn season, the time of the year when the Sun spans the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius — both Saturn ruled. Capricorn is the descent of spirit into matter; Aquarius is the ascent of matter back to spirit. When we’re working through these two signs, it’s all about the physical world — commitment, ambition, success, authority — as well as translating our experiences back to something greater through through humanity and the collective.

When we move from one calendar year to another, we assess the past and we make resolutions for a better future. Maybe it’s going to the gym. Maybe it’s getting organized. Maybe it’s being more open and present. If Capricorn is reality, then Aquarius is hope. So, what do you resolve for the new year? Where are you looking forward?

And if we’re looking to Saturn in January, we can’t look any further than Sagittarius. It’s the sign that Saturn has been residing in since September 2015. What is our faith? Our truth? What do we believe in? Where are we willing to look outside of ourselves for answers? We’ll be pondering these questions and more.

One of the major events this month will be Mercury retrograde on January 5 followed by Jupiter retrograde on January 7. This will put a major emphasis on the mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, initiating a period of reflection and reevaluation. I know that the “R” word makes people nervous, but retrogrades are a yin phase, a time of taking in instead of pushing out into the world. If you are a Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces, this month will bring a shift in gears and a time to take a step back.

The other major event will be the Capricorn New Moon on January 9. Falling just a few degrees off Uranus and Pluto, it will open up a lunar month seeded with the forces of transformation and evolution. January naturally gives us a time to reboot, but this Moon will be a reboot on steroids. How will you use these energies to make a major transformation this year? Need a cosmic jolt to power through your resolutions? This will be your lunar month to do so. With Saturn in Sagittarius, again the spotlight will be on faith, truth, and meaning during this new moon period. Thankfully a trine to Jupiter will smooth out some of the turbulence. And if you make a change, wait will after Mercury turns direct on January 25 to see if your ideas need adjustment or if you’re really ready to blaze into 2016 reborn, transformed, and ready for the new you.

DATES TO NOTE: 1/1 Mercury enters Aquarius; 1/3 Mars enters Scorpio; 1/5 Mercury Retrograde 1 Aquarius, Mercury square Mars, Sun conjunct Pluto, Venus square Neptune; 1/7 Jupiter Retrograde 23 Virgo, Sun square Uranus; 1/8 Mercury enters Capricorn, Venus conjunct Saturn; 1/9 New Moon 19 Capricorn; 1/13 Venus square Chiron; 1/18 Mars trine Neptune, Venus square Jupiter; 1/19 Mercury sextile Chiron; 1/20 Sun enters Aquarius, Mercury square Uranus; 1/22 Mercury conjunct Pluto; 1/23 Full Moon 3 Leo, Venus enters Capricorn; 1/25 Mercury direct 14 Capricorn; 1/30 Mercury conjunct Pluto; 1/31 Mercury square Uranus.

Aries

Aries

December was all about relationships. With Mars, your ruling planet, touring Libra, you had to learn the fine art of diplomacy and compromise. But here’s the thing — your interactions over the last five weeks were probably more blustery than tactful. As you enter January, you may be assessing some of the damage. When Mars enters Scorpio on January 3, use this energy throughout the month to really get to the heart interpersonal matters. Scorpio will turn the spotlight on intimacy, hard truths, and the hidden corners of your psyche. January will also put a strong emphasis on finance, wealth, debt, and other people’s money. And what better time to make new resolutions to take a sharp eye to your bank account and spending habits if that’s something you’ve been meaning to tackle. This is also a time of year when you naturally look toward career, status, and your place in the world. January may have you making a major move, especially when the Sun aligns with Uranus and Pluto on January 5–7. If Uranus and Pluto are dual forces of revolution, reinvention, and rebirth, how will you be completely rethinking your direction in life this month? The new moon on January 9 will underscore this question further, providing you with a major new beginning in your career in the days following — one that may have you making an abrupt change of course. Looking ahead, the full moon on January 23 will put the spotlight on your talents and what you have to share with the world. You may even be thinking seriously about the future as a result. In short, don’t be afraid to rewrite this script this month. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

As you arrive in the New Year, you’ve likely gotten a jump on your resolutions. How could you not with Mars heating up your chart’s sector of organization, health, wellness, and work. Did you hit this gym this past month? Or did you just do an ol’ fashioned purge of the closets? Let’s not forget that Saturn has been on you since September to take a serious look at the things you’d rather not — finances, debt, taxes, your fears, and anything else tucked away in the recesses of your psyche. Keep that in mind as Venus will start the month digging into these very issues. How safe and secure are you? What do you reveal about the deepest parts of yourself? Use January to reinvent yourself or transform anything that is no longer working for you. The days between January 3 and January 9 will give you a bit of a choppy start to the year. First, Mars’s arrival in your chart’s relationship sector will heat things up with a partner throughout the month. Then the Sun’s annual conjunction to Pluto and a square off with Uranus on January 5–7 may have you thinking of making a major change in the home or seeing a shift in your connection to this world. It will also be a time to have a total rebirth in what you believe and your faith. A conjunction to of Venus and Saturn on January 8 will give you a check in with themes of responsibility, commitment, and maturity. Is it time to step up in life? Saturn will set a high bar. The new moon on January 9 will open a lunar month focused on education, travel, and philosophy. Time to stretch your legs, Taurus. You may be planning a long distance trip or dreaming of foreign shores. If you do travel, keep in mind that Mercury will be retrograde from January 5–26. Translation? Double check everything and leave room for travel snafus. But at the heart of the impulse to explore is a need to challenge yourself in new ways, see the world through different eyes, and to figure out what you believe in. Gemini

GeminiThe name of the game right now, Gemini, is introspection. After spending the last month working your way through an existential crisis, you’ll start the year pivoting on themes of faith and meaning. What do you believe in? After everything you’ve been through? These are, of course, heavy subject matters, especially for a sign with a reputation for keeping it light. When Mercury, your ruling planet, turns retrograde on January 5, you’ll commence a three week period of tracing a path back through deep psychological themes — themes that last bubbled up on December 20–21. What loose ends will you need to tie up from then? What are your fears? What intimate parts of yourself are you afraid to reveal to others? On top of that, Jupiter will turn retrograde on January 7, underscoring this energy of introspection and retreat. It’s like you’ll be able to feel the gears of your life shifting in January as Mercury and Jupiter are two major planets in your chart. Home, family, career — it’s all up for review. (Hooray, you must be thinking.) At least you’ll have Venus bringing her charms to your chart’s relationship sector. But if love and romance is on the agenda for January, note that this will come with a dose of scrutiny. Are you ready to make a romantic commitment? If you’re already in a relationship, does it have the strength to step up to the next level? Additionally, keep an eye on January 25 through 31. Mercury will be making a serious of intense aspects to Uranus and Pluto. Something has to change. Something has to be transformed and reborn otherwise it’ll need to go. Cancer

Cancer

When Mars moves on from the bottom of your chart on January 3, you may be thinking, thank god for that! The planet of action as well as noise made quite a ruckus when he was in your chart’s home and family sector the past five weeks. Maybe you moved or made a major change where you live. For a sign so aligned with emotional security and stability, you may have felt destabilized. While Mars will add some spice to your chart’s sector of talent, leisure, and romance (huzzah!), you’ll have a couple of rocky cosmic connections to negotiate going into the new year — namely the Sun’s passage through heavy hitting Pluto and Uranus January 5–7. Fancy another reinvention, Cancer? I know, anything to make the boat stop rocking. That said, the wave is coming and you’ll be looking toward questions of value and security, especially in relationships. The new moon on January 9 will open up a new chapter in a partnership, whether a marriage or a one-on-one connection. Seeded with the energy of transformation and rebirth, the rest of the month will challenge you to make a change, to see things from a different perspective, and even bring radically different people into your life. Plus, Mercury’s retrograde through this very area of your life will mean that January will be a time to revisit a conversation with a partner or clear the air. Looking ahead to the full moon on January 23, you may have a financial decision to make around a purchase or your income. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Leo

LeoGet ready! Not only will the cosmos have you rocking and rolling this month — especially the first half of January — but a full moon in Leo on January 23 will put you in the spotlight. First, let’s take a look at Mars. The planet of action will arrive in the bottom part of your chart on January 3. This area corresponds with home, family, the mother, and emotional security. With that in mind, you may see a lot of action in this area as you enter the new year. You may spend the month gearing up for a move, making changes in the home, or really needing to connect with family. Truth be told, this is a bit of a noisy placement for Mars and not exactly conducive for calm and serenity in the home. Speaking of noisy, the Sun — your ruling planet — will pass through the heavy hitting energies of Pluto and Uranus from January 5–7. Prepare to be transformed, just in time for the new moon on January 9, which will fall in your chart’s sector of health and wellness. This will be the perfect time to really commit to a healthy 2016. New moons are new beginnings and this one will be seeded with Uranus and Pluto’s revolutionary energy. What radical change have you been contemplating? How do you want to transform your everyday life? And now about that Leo Full Moon. It’ll be all about you that last week of January; you wouldn’t want it any other way, right Leo? Even if you’re a “shy lion”, don’t forget to show off your creativity and talent this month. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Key Themes: Transformation, revolution, rebirth, power, health, wellness, habits, daily life, work, colleagues, pets, the self, attention, creativity, talents, home, family, connection, roots, emotional security, the mother, care, nurturing, private life.

Virgo

Virgo

It’s that time of year again, Virgo. Mercury retrograde! And since Mercury is your planet, the month will give you time to pull back, reflect, rework, and regroup. More specifically, Mercury will trace a path back through Capricorn, a sign that helps you express who you are as well as your talents. (Virgo talents include being the boss of everything, setting real world goals, and getting the bathroom grout really white.) That’s said, it’s already been a doozy of a time — Saturn and Neptune have had you questioning everything last month — but if there’s really a potential to January it’s this idea of breakthrough. Let that sink in a moment because breakthroughs aren’t effortless. They require work and a willingness to let go. As a Virgo you’ve got the work part down, but the letting go part can be a little bit of a challenge. Keep that in mind as Mercury works its way back through the heavy hitting forces of Uranus and Pluto during the last two weeks of January. (You actually experienced this December 19–20; this is Round 2.) Where do you need to further let go? Where do you need a reboot, a kickstart, or a total transformation? Again, it’s not easy stuff, but use your Virgo talents of list making and thoughtful planning while leaving room for a little off roading. Speaking of which, Mars will make a move on January 3 and activate your chart’s sector of travel and movement as well as communication, writing, thinking, and learning. This is a busy placement for Mars and may make for a January of back and forth trips and appointments. Your phone or email may be lighting up more than usual as well. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Key Themes: Pulling back, rework, retreat, reassessment, endings, dreams, spirituality, the unconscious, recuperation, talents, gifts, self expression, creativity, children, risk, romance, transformation, change, rebirth, letting go, breakdowns, breakthroughs, consciousness, sudden events, change in direction, movement, travel, classes, writing, siblings, the neighborhood.

Libra

Libra

This time of year the Sun nestles at the bottom of your chart. It presence there shines a light on home, family, roots, and stability. So, with the Sun in this part of your chart for most of this month, this is a natural time of the year when you pull back from the world to privacy of your inner circle — the people who know you the best. Here’s the thing, Libra. Ever since the planet Pluto moved into this area of your chart a few years back (wow, make that seven years!?!), this whole idea of stability, security, and connection has undergone a profound change. In some cases you may feel as though your roots were ripped out over the past couple of years, so this may be a sensitive time of year as you contemplate everything that’s changed in the home and with family. That said, January will make some waves for you. The run up to the new moon on January 9 will touch on these tender themes of connection, safety, and security. There’s a sense of, once again, having to reassess this idea of tribe and belonging. The new moon will give you a powerful reset. Who do you want closest to you? Whom do you trust implicitly? Does your inner circle need to change? Do you need to move? Speaking of movement, Venus’s arrival in Sagittarius just before the new year has you in a restless mood. Maybe you’re planning a trip in January or feeling like you’re running back and forth all over town. When Venus catches up with Saturn on January 8, you’ll have a major check in with the planet of maturity and responsibility. No slacking off. Lastly, Mars’s arrival in Scorpio on January 3 will heat up themes of money and income over the coming month. Maybe this will be a perfect opportunity to make a New Year’s resolution to create more financial stability and security in your life. Scorpio

Scorpio

Let’s take a look back, Scorpio. From 2012 to just this past September, you were in the hot seat. Saturn was a long term visitor to your sign and under his watchful gaze you had to hustle, perfect your game, and step up in life. You made many strides over the last two years — even if you rounded out September feeling absolutely exhausted. Come January 3, Mars will arrive in Scorpio and give you a cosmic shot of drive and courage. I like to think that this is the month you decide to take all that Saturn taught you out for a spin. Mars in Scorpio is like Scorpio on steroids. Look out, world! This month will also be the month when the Sun, your career planet, tangles with Pluto and Uranus. If you’re cruising on the highway in your Saturn made car, the days around January 5–7 will push you to take things in a different direction, maybe even radically so. That said, keep in mind that Mercury will be retrograde for much of January. It’s not a deal breaker, but just double check the fine print. It may be that it’s after January 25 that you really feel the forward movement promised by Mars. The full moon just a few days before will turn the spotlight once again on career. You have yet another decision to make about your direction in life, your status in the world, and your ambitions. It’s one of the most visible times in the year for you, Scorpio. So with the tools of action and success at your disposal, what will you want to create this month? Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Book your consultation now.

Key Themes: The self, action, ambition, vitality, taking charge, career, ambition, reputation, status, place in the world, direction, spotlight, recognition, communication, speaking, thinking, writing, travel, transportation, relationship commitment, relationship definition, values.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius

You’re the wanderer of the zodiac, Sagittarius. You’re the vagabond, the seeker, and the explorer. So, what happens when your ruling planet, Jupiter, turns around and retraces its steps? Starting January 7, you may have the sense that you’ve pushed as far as you can into the world. Or, maybe something has grown as much as it can and now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor? (Pro Tip — Jupiter spends four months out of the year retrograde, so this month marks a natural retreat of energy, like the tide. It will turn direct on May 9.) Keep in mind that Jupiter has been in Virgo since August, the sign of work, organization, craft, and purity. Virgo is also the highest sign in your chart and this has been a time when you’ve naturally put your efforts toward your career and status in the world. That said, what do you need to circle back to? What do you need to reflect on? In fact, reflection will be a major theme this month as Jupiter will turn retrograde, but Mercury will on January 5 additionally. Seeing how Mercury is your relationship as well as your career planet, you’ll be reworking through these areas of your life. You may be asking yourself, what do I value in the world? What do I value in a relationship or a committed partnership? When Mercury passes through Uranus and Pluto during the last two weeks of January, breakthrough will be on the agenda. This isn’t easy astrology and the days around January 26 will push you to make a change or break with the past. Are you ready to take a leap, Sagittarius? 2016 is going to be a big year for you. Make a list of your goals, your values, the things you want to see bloom this year. Use January to create a powerful foundation. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Capricorn

Capricorn

Happy birthday, Capricorn! With Saturn, your ruling planet, tucked away behind the scenes, this will likely be a quiet, reflective birthday. You’ve been through a lot; you’ve seen the four corners of your life upend over the last few years. So, of course, you’re really working hard on that existential crisis lately. As you come up to the potent Capricorn New Moon on January 9, the cosmos will be giving you yet another do-over. How do you want to reinvent yourself in 2016? You may even feel as though there’s a stark divide between last year and this year, this sense that you can’t go back. So, what do you want to create? Use a conjunction of Venus and Saturn on January 8 to make a commitment and cement your direction for this year. Another thing to keep in mind is that Mars will enter your chart’s sector of friends and community on January 3. As a result, this area of your life will heat up over the month. You may feel a strong impulse to connect to others and find your tribe. After experiencing so much change the last few years, who’s got your back? Who are the solid people that have your trust implicitly? If you’re feeling a lack of these types of people, January may be the month that you seek them out. Towards the end of the month, on January 23, the full moon will light up themes of finance, security, stability, debt, and legacies. You may have a decision to make about your money as well as the resources you share with others. If you’re dealing with the banks over a loan, wait until after Mercury retrograde on January 25  to sign the papers. Want to learn more about how the astrology of January will affect you? Aquarius

Aquarius

Aquarius, this is the time of the year when you naturally wind down and retreat from the world. Perhaps you’re even in a reflective mood. As you prepare for another birthday, look back on where you’ve been in 2015, what has been lost and what has been gained. If anything this has been a year to explore themes of faith and meaning as well as make stronger connections in friendships and within your community. The new moon on January 9 will point at a upcoming lunar month focused on spirituality, meditation, recuperation, and letting go. If fact, especially as you open up a new year with thoughts on resolutions, the new moon will give you a perfect time to shed old habits or addictions. Really use the energy of Pluto and Uranus, two heavy hitting forces fueling the new moon, to really draw a line between this year and the one before. Another area to keep an eye on is career, status, and worldly ambitions. Mars will enter the highest reaches of your chart on January 3 and inspire you to take command and step up efforts to achieve success. January will represent a peak in your career, one that comes every two years. Use it wisely. With that in mind, you may feel as though you’re pulled in two directions this month, caught between a sense of retreat and reflection versus a push out into world. Once the Sun arrives in Aquarius on January 20 will you feel better positioned to move forward — doubly so after Mercury turns direct on January 25. Additionally, the full moon on January 23 will turn the spotlight on a relationship. Something may come to a head or you may have a decision to make about a partner or collaboration. Pisces

Pisces

Is it possible to both be coming and going this month? At the same time? One one hand, when Mars arrives in your chart’s sector of foreign travel and exploration on January 3, you may be itching to pack your bags in search of adventure. In fact, this month will place a strong emphasis on seeing the world as well as stretching the mind through philosophy and education. But then two of your major planets, Mercury and Jupiter, will turn retrograde on January 5 and 7 respectively. A retrograde is not unlike the tide pulling you back; it’s a time to review and reflect instead of take action. So, with that in mind, you may feel both the impulse to push out into the world as well as pull back at the same time. It’s also worth mentioning that Jupiter will turn retrograde in your chart’s sector of relationship and “other people.” Ever since Jupiter arrived in this area back in August, you’ve been naturally exploring life through one-on-one connection. Maybe you’ve gotten into a serious relationship or experienced a bounty of new people in your life. Jupiter’s change of direction will give you a few months to make adjustments, reassess, and process all you’ve experienced since August. Additionally, the new moon on January 9 will open up a new chapter in friendships and community that will unfold throughout the month. The presence of Uranus and Pluto in the new moon, however, will mean that this will be a time to take a serious look at your alliances. Do you trust the people around you? Is it time to leave a group behind? How do you make connections in the world? Find powerful new community? The full moon on January 23 will shine a spotlight on health and wellness. If you needed to give your new year’s resolutions a reboot, a square off with Mars will be the inspiration you need to get organized, go to the gym, and eat right.
