Happy New Moon in Gemini! Time to plant our seeds in support of communication, information, writing, travel, and learning. Gemini is the sign of curiosity as well as duality. New moons set the tone for the next two weeks and this one will have a strong theme of movement to it, even if its in another direction as Mercury will turn retrograde on June 7. In addition, new moons are new beginnings! This new moon will be exact on May 28, 2014 at 2:40 pm EDT and 7 degrees of Gemini.

The new moon chart is kind of a mixed bag. For one thing, Mercury, the planetary ruler, is at 29 Gemini — the last degree of the sign. Planets at 29 degrees have this funky vibe to them (think Saturn!). On one hand the Mercury is preparing to enter a new sign, but like the end of a year, there’s a lot of reflection and a push to bring meaning and resolution. Twenty-nine degrees of any sign is the end of a journey. The karmic balance has come due. Will we have the money to pay it? And this isn’t the only planet at 29 degrees. Venus at 29 Aries just off the South Node has had us confronting our past actions in relationships over the last few days.

The other thing is the new moon’s tight square, or 90-degree angle, to Neptune in Pisces. I think the Sun in hard aspect to Neptune is, well, hard. Why? The Sun is our ego and our identity. When it runs up against Neptune you get a lot of distortion. (See: Healing Neptune Problems.) Neptune is trying to get us to surrender to a higher plan and to open up to the divine, but the Sun and Moon are putting up a fight — not a huge fight, but the sort of tantrum not unfamiliar to a two-year-old. Although tempting, try not to pour yourself a drink while you shake your fist at the sky over the next couple of weeks. Instead, stop fighting yourself. Meditate. Tap into your intuition. Go for a swim. Take a deep breath and open your arms to the great unknown.

With Mercury slowing down and preparing to go retrograde, we’re doing a lot of reviewing and reworking over the coming lunar cycle. It’s two steps forward and one step back. Although we want to rocket forward with Mars direct, we don’t quite have the green light yet. Instead it’s flashing yellow. Yes, Mars is making a trine to the Gemini New Moon — whatever we begin, we’ll have the energy and drive to see it through. Just go slow, stay alert, and don’t be surprised if you need to make a midcourse adjustment.
