Happy Full Moon in Cancer! This is the time of the year when we release our intentions for nurturing, care, emotional connection, family, the mother, and home. The full moon is exact January 15, 2014 at 11:52 pm EST, 25 degrees Cancer/Capricorn. It also threads back to two other moments in time — first, it is the climax of a cycle that began on July 8, 2013 with the Cancer New Moon; second, the full moon squares the October 18, 2013 lunar eclipse degree, triggering something that was seeded then.

Cancer is normally such soft and gentle sign. As an archetype we get images of an almost saintly, caring mother ready to ameliorate a whole host of ills with a soothing word and a gentle hug. Cancer is the Moon, the tides, the ebb and flow of emotions, the umbilical cord that connects us to something beyond ourselves, whether family or spirit. In the northern hemisphere, the sign of Cancer lines up with the start of summer, a season when the physical world is in full bloom.

So it’s curious that this full moon should tie in with an ongoing formation called the cardinal grand cross. In turn, the comfort of Cancer seems diametrically opposed to the almost ruthless spin of change evidenced in Uranus and Pluto. It may not align exactly (see the Capricorn New Moon, for example) with the cardinal cross, but it’s close enough to churn the waves of our psyche like a Category 5 hurricane. There’s an infantile rage in the full moon’s opposition to Pluto, a tidal wave of emotion, a howl that cuts across all time and dimensions. The full moon is our childhood wounds come to term.

If you’re feeling exceedingly emotional at this time, know that it is normal. Allow yourself to feel, even if it’s rage. Vent it out until nothing is left and, in it’s place, bring in the nurturing and care that you never received. I am reminded of a friend I did a consult for recently. She had been the victim of a horrific childhood trauma at age four and still carried a deep wound because of it. After working on the energy for an hour, I got an image of her, as her adult self, comforting and caring for her four year old self, signaling to me that we had shifted some of the energy behind the trauma.

We’re in a powerful portal of time from January to July. Much like the contractions of birth, the cardinal cross will palpably speed this process along. Should you want to dedicate this period of time to heal emotional traumas, this would be a profound way to use this energy.

As a bonus, if you would like to proactively work with the energies of the full moon, I’ve partnered with my friend Bevin Branlandingham of Queer Fat Femme to create a series of journaling exercises and healing rituals centered around the lunar cycle. Click here to download.
