Happy birthday, Sagittarius! You’re the sign that teaches us about exploration, other cultures, other ways of thinking, all in the quest for better understanding ourselves and the world.

Sagittarius takes the curiosity and ideas of Gemini, its opposing sign, and forms philosophy, ideology. Word become books. Education becomes a degree. Local becomes international.

Sag is a sign that’s been getting a lot of play lately. Why? Because Saturn settled into a two year residency in Sagittarius that began in September 2015. It’s really important to take note of this because wherever Saturn is — meaning whatever sign it’s in — we’re doing a lot of heavy work within the themes of the sign. And what is Sagittarius? Yes, it’s travel, religion, and education, but what it really describes is how we see the world. Do we look at the map and feel the need to explore and gain more wisdom? Or do we look at it from a place of fear, fear of the unknown?

We’ve been seeing a lot of the shadow side of Sag lately — issues over freedom of speech, travel, fighting over differences of opinions. With Jupiter bouncing off Pluto and Uranus into next month, these differences will be more highlighted than ever. Why? Because we have to resolve them. Pluto and Uranus make it an imperative. It’s soul level work and it has to be transmuted.

We have to own our shadow right now. We have to see ourselves in everyone. Jupiter is in Libra right now. We have to find commonality, balance, consensus.

There’s a quote that has attributed to Carl Sagan, apocryphally so, but it always makes me think of Sagittarius — “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”

May we never lose our light, our curiosity for the world and the unknown. May we look up and still see wonder.
