Happy birthday Cancer! Happy Solstice!

If you’re in the northern hemisphere like me, Cancer ushers in the start of summer. The trees and flowers are full with promise, the days are long and warm, and we enjoy the bounty of the natural world.

Cancer is the first water sign, which means that it deals with the realm of emotions. In the case of Cancer, it’s primal emotions, emotions formed through touch, taste, smell. Cancer is home, family, memory, nostalgia, connection, and sensitivity. Cancer loves comfort food — old family recipes, the foods we grew up on — as well as loves to bring comfort to others.

Cancer is also the sign that aligns with the bottom of the zodiac wheel. Although it’s a water sign, this part of the chart closely connects us to this earthly incarnation, like a root, forming a foundation. And what could be more foundational than the nest? Here we nurture ourselves and gain sustenance. Here we experience the archetype of the mother.

As the sign of the crab, Cancer is also the ocean — both literal and metaphoric. Our lives ebb and flow like the tide. We pull in, we push out, our emotions wax and wane like the moon.

Lately Cancer season has been a tough time due to the anything but nurturing presence of Pluto and Uranus. I think this has been doubly hard on Cancer since it’s a sign that generally likes to keep things as they are. There’s emotional comfort in things staying unchanged. But Pluto and Uranus says that EVERYTHING has to change. If anything — especially as we get into the second week of July, use this time to purge old emotions and face our unconsciousness. We still have to change, even if it means uprooting and planting ourselves elsewhere.
