It’s been clear over the last few years, ever since Pluto moved into Capricorn in 2008, that we’re in a passage when the world that we’ve built needs to profoundly transform. If astrology is just another way to tell time, then Pluto is telling us that change is non-negotiable.

So, here we are. And I’ve been thinking about Pluto a lot, actually. Like many of you, I’m going through my own Pluto transit — Pluto square Pluto — and thinking about the amount of energy expended on fighting the inevitable. What happens when we allow a process to happen instead of fighting it?

Pluto isn’t easy. It’s a stark look at ourselves, the world, and our place in it. With Pluto we examine the underbelly, a necessary process in the evolution of consciousness. While Pluto speaks to the power others — even our obsessions or addictions — have over us, it also teaches us to find our own power.

We’re officially in Aquarius season, a time when we experience life through the prism of freedom, equality, friendship, community, and humanity. True, like all signs, there’s a shadow side to Aquarius, a side that can be quite cold and inhuman. It’s also a brilliant sign. It’s the sign of consciousness, innovation, and progressive thinking. It’s the final air sign, taking all the ideas of Gemini and social currency of Libra, and building it into a library of thought. Even as the world shakes, Aquarius is a reminder that we have to look ahead, we have to create something completely and radically different.

Pluto clears the landscape, viscerally so. What are you going to build in its place? It has to be something new.
